How cold is your house with the heating off, even with double glazes windows?

I am in a Victorian terrace. House was always cold and droughty. Now have new double glazed windows and so better, but I just went upstairs (where the heating is off) and was surprised at how chilly it is. I guess the walls lose a lot of heat and even if double glazed, the wooden sashes are not completely air tight?

First thing this morning it was around 11 degrees inside (felt colder!)

Artichokeleaves · 28/11/2021 11:54

Heating off overnight. Mine was down to 12 when I got up this morning.

Not sure really as the heating comes on if it drops below 18 degrees.

The biggest thing that makes a difference is decent interlined curtains imo, you lose a lot of heat through glass. I have got huge bay windows and I could have the heating on forever without the curtains and it wouldn't be warm.

About 3/ 4 years ago our boiler suddenly packed in during a particularly cold spell.

It was freezing, even with jumpers and blankets we were still shivering. My DH usually isn’t bothered by the cold but even he really struggled.

So glad when the boiler man turned up and was able to fix it.

Heating went off at 10pm, it was 12 degrees when I got up, freezing!

Sounds like my house is normal then! I think I expected the double glazed windows to make more difference than they have.

We have a well insulated house and its the same, about 12 degrees. The rooms that heat up most easily are the ones where I've put up huge thick thermal lined curtains, on poles that are much wider than the windows. I keep them closed during the day as well.

We have a ‘new’ house and it’s cool in the summer and warm in the (3rd) Winter. Not put the heating on yet and don’t expect to for awhile. We have a fire downstairs which I put on low for a couple of hours yesterday evening for the first time this Autumn/Winter and it became far too hot.

There's already an active thread in Chat about this with about 140 posts, so it might be useful for you to look at that one, OP.

Same situation here. Can’t remember the last time the temp was that low in the house!
ColinTheKoala · 28/11/2021 15:41

Cold! I've posted on a couple of other threads about the fact our boiler is on its last legs (being replaced early next month) so we're only having the heating on for one hour a day. We've got other sources of heat but it's COLD.

I went outside this morning and informed DH that it was indeed colder outside than in the house. He did not believe me Grin

Karmagoat · 28/11/2021 15:45

We are in a victorian terrace too, and have double glazing but it gets really chilly without the heating on, its a draughty old house

lljkk · 28/11/2021 15:52

No wall insulation or poor loft insulation will make any upstairs cold right now.

OnGoldenPond · 28/11/2021 15:53

This house is super insulated and we have hardly had the heating on at all this year. Have only had it on a few of the coldest days for a couple of hours in the evening and that is enough. We built this house ourselves and moved in a year ago. The architect insisted on a really high spec for insulation and it has massively paid off.

bigbluebus · 28/11/2021 17:17

It's 9°c in our bedroom upstairs right now. We've had no power or heating since Friday night. It doesn't get anywhere near that cold when the heating is on for a couple of hours in the morning and evening.
