How hard is it to manage a phone number change

For various reasons I’d like to change my phone
But am panicked at people I want to stay in touch with messaging but not getting their messages. Maybe people I don’t speak to that often but want to stay in touch with.
Two step verification - literally everything seems to need this. I won’t remember what I need to change until I get locked out, and I’ve been looking but once already changed number worried you can’t get back into loads of accounts. I hate modern life. Is it as bad as I think it will be??

Is it your phone you want to change or your phone number only?
It is easy enough to port your current number to a new phone.

It’s fine - you can take your old number with you. You just have to request a PAC code. You may experience a day of being out of contact while your number switches over to the new network but it’s honestly no hassle really. I change mobile providers every couple of years to make sure I get the best deal and I’ve never had a problem.

Twostepmodernlife · 28/11/2021 11:10

I don’t want to take my old number with me.
I need to be uncontactable to a whole section of my past but don’t want to lose contact with the rest of my contacts.

And seriously worried about the two step verification thing!

I suggest take out new contract alongside old one for a couple of months - pop one of the sim cards in another phone. Then, as soon as you need to change or reject old numbers or accounts, you can reset to the new phone number.

Thank you I’ll do that

I have ADHD, as a result I've gone through a zillion phones and numbers due to leaving the handset somewhere.

I've yet to come across a 2FA that I haven't been able to access but it sometimes involves a phone call.

People lose phones and need access to sites/banking etc.

Don't waste too much time worrying about it!

You mean for bank accounts and things?

Don't have to contact them in advance to let them know, then follow whatever procedure they send.

DaisyNGO · 28/11/2021 12:26

Don't you, that should say!! Sorry!!

Ok this is is reassuring. When I go through my text messages there’s about 30 different organisations who contact me for two step verification numbers and I definitely will not be able to advance contact all of them before changing my number

There are several solutions in order not to have this problem with logging in to accounts. The simplest would be to use temporary phone numbers to log in to social networks.

I have been using fake numbers for logging in for a long time because I often have to change my real phone number due to my profession. You can use a phone number generator to get a fake phone number number. In addition to the fact that it solves your problem with logging in to various sites, it is also a solution for your data protection.

I put off changing my number for ages because of the two-factor thing - had it linked to half my online life. When I finally did it, I used a temporary number from 7sim.net to recover accounts one by one before updating them with the new number. Grabbed a UK mobile number straight from the browser, no sign-up, and the codes came through in under a minute each time. Felt like I was cheating the system, but it worked.
