Tips for keeping a toddler warm in the buggy

DS2 hates any covers over him so always kicks off the foot muff and screams. Also hates hats and mittens of any description. It's suddenly just got really cold so looking for tips to keeping him warmer! Will layer him up more but would like him to feel cosier for DS1 school run.

Would a sheepskin liner on the buggy help?

A snowsuit?

littleselda · 28/11/2021 09:01

Oh yes I will try that, good idea!

How about a disana boiled wool suit. Not so bulky that they can't move but really warm. Or just the dungarees are brilliant when they're walking.

We layered Dd2 up, didn't do a snowsuit at that age but did tights under lined trousers or dungarees (H&M are brilliant for these). We could also use the raincover easier than the footmuff which often kept the worst of the cold off.

Maybe I am a terrible mother but I tend to just let DS get cold if he refuses to wear a hat/gloves/whatever. It doesn't seem to bother him particularly. He's always dressed appropriately so it's not going to do him any damage and he always runs hot as it is.

Cyw2018 · 28/11/2021 09:08

Put him in the warmest clothes possible like a snowsuit or fleece joggers (Jojo mamam do really good thick ones) that cover as much of him as possible then accept that if he gets cold hands he will eventually realise that gloves are good, but it may not be this winter! If he is really struggling with his hands and resisting his gloves he may find it funny to wear some of your mitts or gloves all the way up to his elbow, so carry a spare pair.

Mine wears a snowsuit, wellie socks and wellies. He won't wear a hat or mittens either, just flings them off! I usually pull the hood on the pushchair down so I guess that gives some protection from the wind.

My almost 2 year old wears a snowsuit as he always kicks blankets off. He always takes hats off as well but since buying him a balaclava it's stayed in his head and he seems content with it. My 4 year old also still wears a snowsuit on really cold days as we walk everywhere and she hates the wind and rain

AllTheCakes · 28/11/2021 09:20

My DS usually refuses any sort of hat and gloves but will happily wear the Paw Patrol ones. Anything with a character goes down well.

Kippersfortea · 28/11/2021 09:34

My coat and cosy toe refuser used to wear thermals underneath their clothes

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/11/2021 09:36

I used to pull the rain cover down. It must keep the wind off. DC preferred the rain cover on for some unknown reason.

littleselda · 28/11/2021 09:48

Ah good tip re rain cover as he seems fine with that so we will give that a go. Will head to jojo later today and pick up some thermals and snowsuit.
Wasn't that big a problem as it was quite mild weather but the weather seemed to have really turned!
Thank you all so much!

And balaclava is a great idea, will give that a go too!

I feel you. Twins hate gloves and hoods. They have snowsuit and thick wool socks (from evil amazon) and shoes, gloves on offer and replaced as I can. If its windy, raincover over

Kippersfortea · 28/11/2021 10:41

Mine wouldn't wear gloves or scarves but would wear hats, so I got those hat, scarf and glove all in ones. This kind of thing...

Tights!!!
You can get ones with a thicker foot bit too.
All our DC wore tights under their trousers in winter. Stopped pulling socks off when they were smaller and prevented the dreaded ‘sock slipping down inside wellies’ torture Smile

I used to give my boy a drink of warm milk in his buggy.
