London - help with taxis and distances between sights

Hey

Off to London in a couple of weeks with DSs.

Middle son hates the tube.

What would the price be for a taxi from London King's Cross to Harrods (they want to see the Christmas windows and lights)
Would it be walkable from Knightsbridge to Oxford Circus area?

Thanks 😊

Quite a long walk, I wouldn't do it. Plug an Uber route in to get a guesstimate of price.

Would a bus be an option?

LadyWithLapdog · 27/11/2021 20:30

Too long to walk. When’s the last time your middle son took the Tube? Might he feel differently about it now?

Sooverthemill · 27/11/2021 20:30

Buses are a good way to see London if your son can manage a bus

Justwingingit2005 · 27/11/2021 20:33

Didn't think of buses..... hes ok with buses. I'll have a look into it 🙂

Hes 12 but always hated tubes. Says its the smell, and feeling closed.

It's about 4 miles, so probably further than you'd want to walk.

TfL recommends bus 30 or 205 to Baker Street then change to the 74

I'd get the 390 to Hyde Park Corner and walk the last bit.

Caramellatteplease · 27/11/2021 20:39

Pop your start and end point into google and it will give you a walking route. Kings cross to Harrods is possibly a bit far (1 hour 15 mins according to google) but I've done oxford circus (actually Centre point) to knightsbridge ish and back.
I'd give it a go depending on what else I was doing that day, but then I've done Victoria station to British Library before. Walking is absolutely totally and utterly the best way to see London, yy to hoping a bus if needed (google can help with that too).

LBOCS2 · 27/11/2021 20:40

Download Citymapper and plug in where you want to be - you can choose not to include the tube and it will give you alternative routes.

Charley50 · 27/11/2021 20:44

Might be better seeing the lights around Carnaby St, Soho, then Covent Garden tbh. Those areas are a bit more cosy somehow. Harrods is crap and miles away.

Would it be walkable from Knightsbridge to Oxford Circus area?

Totally walkable as long as your kids aren't too little but it will take time so think of the walk as an activity itself and plan a route with some London sights to see.

I'd either walk up though Hyde Park to Marble Arch then along Oxford Street to Oxford Circus, or (slightly longer) go via Buckingham Palace and Green Park then Piccadilly and up Regent Street. Not quite the most direct routes, but the most touristy.

You can always start walking and plan to grab a bus if you get tired. Chances are the bus won't be much faster but you will be sitting down.

WhatsitWiggle · 27/11/2021 20:52

Get the Citymapper app, it'll give you buses, walking times and approx uber costs.

lljkk · 27/11/2021 20:52

London buses are great for seeing London sights -- much better than tube.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 27/11/2021 20:57

My dad is a black cab driver.

Depending on the time of day from kings cross to Harrods - about £25/£30.

From Knightsbridge to Oxford Circus it's about a 20-25min walk - best way to walk to see the lights is up Piccadilly and left up Old Bond Street.

Anything else, let me know - he's got plenty of info on that sort of thing!

Nitgel · 27/11/2021 21:10

Yes go through bond Street. Harrods do have pretty windows! It's a nice walk. Maybe cut through hyde Park to see the ducks Grin

MrsPnut · 27/11/2021 21:14

Definitely the bus, the buses announce the next stop which helps when you need to get off and all the bus stops have decent maps showing which bus to catch to get to where.
