A quick PayPal question

Hi all!

Just a question: if I sell something on a Facebook selling group (Goods and Services), obtain proof of postage and show it to the buyer, but the item never arrives, do I have to issue a refund? If it makes a difference, buyer asked me to post to a different address from the one on PayPal. Buyer is nice enough and has all been amicable.

That is all! Thank you 😊

there is a paypal seller protection but it will only cover you if you use the same address as registered on paypal.
i wouldn't do it - ask the buyer to update their paypal address to match and then you will do it

also i think that it needs to be a postal service with tracking, so i always ensure that i add on enough money to cover a tracked service, plus paypal fees and a bit for the hassle if they are not collecting the item in person..

You broke PayPal rules by sensing if you another address, so you won’t be Covered when she says it didn’t arrive.

BleuJay · 27/11/2021 20:04

Also proof of postage is not recognised by PayPal, it’s proof of delivery. You must send so that it’s tracked and signed for.

You've lost your protection by posting to an address that's not on their PayPal account. They can contact PayPal to claim the money back and PayPal will support them.

BrutusMcDogface · 27/11/2021 20:07

I’m in the wrong for posting to a different address? They are not in the wrong fit bit using their PayPal address? Oh ffs.

Thanks for the responses.

Where do I stand if I ask her to change her address and she doesn’t?

Is this how scammers work?

I don’t think she’s a scammer but wtf do I know.

This. You are not covered at all unless you dispatch to the name and address given via PayPal.

If they want it delivered to a different address they must change the address on their PayPal.

Be firm.

I've refunded and asked them to change details before re-purchasing.

BrutusMcDogface · 27/11/2021 20:11

If I refund then that’s that. I’ve wasted all the money I spent on fees and postage and she’s back to where she started. The item is nowhere to be found.

Did you send by Royal Mail - if so and you’ve got proof of postage surely you can claim from them up to their limit, providing you can prove how much you sold the item for. You may not get the whole amount back but at least it will be something if PayPal lets you down.
You can do your claim on line but bear in mind that Royal Mail doesn’t consider an item lost until 10 working days have elapsed from the date the item should have arrived, so you can’t claim before then.
