Can a school help a parent in financial difficulty

There's a family at school I know they are having a hard time financial and emotionally , and I don't mean just buying Xmas gifts, if I raise with pastoral team at school what help can they offer? Or is this pointless? Will they get bothered if I say something. It's not neglect. I can't help them myself and our kids aren't really that friendly. I know maybe some other parents might help out, but it's hard as I'm sure others have issues we don't know about so tricky to ask.

Why would you be annoyed another parent thinks you need some help? Isn’t that a kind thing to do?
My mother would have been furious - she was the type who turned away the harvest festival gifts - but that was because if anybody had dug a little deeper, they might have found out the scale of abuse and neglect going on.

At this time of year some of our local schools collect/receive food, toiletry and toy donatations. I re-call a friend nominating someone in need. It's a kind thing to do and the nominated person wasn't made aware of the nomination, it was just passed and taken as a good deed. You could suggest your school does this, get the whole school and community involved. Likely lots of donations will be made and can be given out to any families in need. Anything remaining can be given to a food bank.
