Help - mums of curly haired girls!!

My daughter has the loveliest hair after it's just washed. I use child's farm shampoo and conditioner, followed by a detangler and curly custard from my little coco. Unfortunately it doesn't last and the second pic is what it's like in the morning and most of the time 😩

Any advice? Is there a product I can use day to day to revive her curls?

No idea but she has beautiful hair

upupandawaytoday · 27/11/2021 15:39

I have a spray water bottle to dampen and cup the curls.

Sadly though since DD started school and has to wear her hair up, the curls mostly get brushed out and it makes me sad!

mistermagpie · 27/11/2021 15:41

Not a girl but my son has very similar hair. How often are you washing it? His is better the less we wash it and looks amazing if he gets caught in the rain, so I spray it with a bit of water mixed with a tiny bit of conditioner to replicate that!

Can you change to washing it in the morning rather than at night? Also wearing a hat to sleep in would probably help

WakeUpLockie · 27/11/2021 15:46

My 2 boys had very similar hair. Agree wash it less and cup with wet hands.

Tangle teaser but only on actual tangles.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/11/2021 15:48

My hair is a bit like this..

Pin it back overnight, real silk pillowcase (might as well establish her expensive tastes early on) to stop it tangling, then in the morning dampen the girls and use a bit of condition or anti frizz spray to encourage the curls.

TatoAndBeans · 27/11/2021 15:49

Try to minimise the shampoo, I wash my daughters with cheap conditioner most times, shampoo occasionally.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 27/11/2021 15:50

I genuinely feel your pain - DD's hair was exactly the same! Beautiful golden ringlets, but her hair was so fine all she had to do was lean against the sofa and it became absolutely matted at the back.

I used to put it in braids after washing at night so it didn't tangle again overnight, but there really isn't much you can do above what you're already doing. Spritzing it with leave in conditioner on a non-washing hair day did help get a comb through, but for the first ten years of her life her hairstyle was mostly 'birds nest'. I'm sure her schools thought I was a terrible parent, but the honest truth is that I could spend half an hour on it every day & it would look awful again in less than 24hrs.

Try this. It's the only thing that works on my Dd. You only need a little bit. Cantu brand is really good too.

My DD has the same hair but longer. I only use conditioner, Pantene usually. I just detangle it with fingertips in the bath. I find we have to do it most days to stay ahead of knots. If she lets us tie it up we'll get two days out of it. A squirt of any leave-in conditioner to freshen it. Never brush.

Teacupsandtrainers · 27/11/2021 16:12

We use the my little coco detangling spray between washes with some water if it needs it. Detangle then scrunch or twist the curls to reactivate them after. My DD has similar hair but not as thick as your DDs.

frozenlife · 27/11/2021 17:36

Thank you all. I tend to only wash it twice a week. I will try using conditioner only and reviving with a bit of water in the morning.

Love the idea of a silk pillow case and I can see how that would really help.

I'm an adult with fine curly hair. Personally conditioner only has never worked for me and I found it causes build up on my scalp and makes it itch. I therefore use Child's Farm baby shampoo (and a conditioner without any -cone ingredients, basically avoiding putting plastic on the curls.

I mainly style with curl gel, but for a young child I'd be looking at a detangling spray as mentioned above.

Also yes to a silk pillowcase (or a satin one will do the same thing but cheaper)

Minimise/no brushing between washes either.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 27/11/2021 19:15

You can also buy silk hair caps which are great for stopping the tangles

Crunchiedelight · 27/11/2021 19:19

Children’s cantu detangler spray each morning. My daughters hair is very similar and is a mess in the morning. I spray plant on, brush through and gently scrunch and her hair looks lovely every day.

Covetthee · 27/11/2021 19:33

Baby Cantu products work a treat for curly hair, esp the detangling spray.

Also using a denman brush, when wet. Watch a few youtube videos to show correct way of brushing to get best curls.

A little spray of water or detangler in the morning and a brush through with the denman and curls are back

My daughters curls look gorgeous since I’ve started doing the above

Joystir59 · 27/11/2021 19:36

I used to have curly hair. Never comb or brush it except after washing with a very wide toothed afro comb. Wash once a week. Spray with water and cup in the mornings

I'd recommend a silk sleep bonnet. You can get them on Amazon or Etsy amongst other places.

EcoCustard · 27/11/2021 20:06

I am a curl and all 4dc are very curly. I cowash, and in the morning I spray with conditioner diluted with water and comb through the tangles with fingers or wide tooth comb then leave. I only use curly girl friendly stuff. I sometimes put a little curl cream on the older two. Mine wouldn’t wear bonnets or covers. I wash it 2/3 times a week. It’s beautiful but a nightmare for their dance classes.

ilovetea14 · 27/11/2021 21:41

Her hair is gorgeous. My Dd is the same when she wakes up. I spray her hair with water and detangler spray and use a brush for curly hair every morning, other wise it's a big frizzy mess 😂

I keep meaning to buy a silk pillow case as it's meant to help. I wash her hair once a week unless it's really bad. After her shower I put a silk bonnet on her head you will get one on Amazon. I love my daughters hair but it's a lot of work.

When she gets home from school I spray her hair with water just to bring the curls back to life. I watched a lot of utube videos as no one in my family have curly hair.

Hetyanni · 27/11/2021 21:44

Satin pillowcase

Heruka · 27/11/2021 21:48

It is beautiful. Are you aware of the curly girl method op? Worth a read about. I don’t understand it all really, my hair is poker straight, but have learned about cowashing with dd and use a hair mask as conditioner after. I struggle to follow the advice to never brush unless wet - but I’m going to get a spray bottle now after reading tips on here. Also sometimes leaving conditioner in (normal conditioner not specific leave in) really helps the curls.

Graphista · 27/11/2021 21:48

My daughter has even curlier hair than this I used to use a spray in detangler of a morning and I never brushed her hair only combed it with a wide toothed comb

If it had been a "thing" then and I'd known to do this I'd have got her a silk pillowcase years ago which she uses now. She also wraps her hair in scarves 40's/Hilda Ogden style to sleep in when she sleep not in her own bed which her boyfriend apparently finds hilarious! But he saw what it was like when she didn't and agreed it's best when she does this at his.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned coconut oil yet!
