True crime

Anyone else like True Crime?

I have recently become a bit obsessed with revisiting the case of the murder of poor Billie-Jo Jenkins - does anyone else remember it? The foster father was tried three times and ultimately acquitted meaning it is 'technically' an open case or unsolved crime. Yet, there are almost no documentaries or programmes about it anymore, unlike eg Maddie McCann, Jill Dando etc (other high profile unsolved crimes)

Does anyone have any theories? I have my own but wondered if anyone else thinks about this case too?

I am fascinated by true crime.

Currently down a rabbit hole with Natascha Kampuch. Just read her book 3096 days and working my way through her new ish one.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natascha_Kampusch

Then I started looking up Marc Dutroux and Sabine Dardenne.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Dutroux

Always been very interested in true crime- used to sit and read about Fred and Rose West when I was about 13/14 and it’s gone from there.

The Billie Jo murder fascinates me. I wouldn’t like to speculate too much but my Gran actually used to live 2 streets away at the time and there were several “odd” break ins and a man who people knew was acting very oddly. This doesn’t make him a murderer however of course.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/11/2021 08:51

(There was something in the Billie Jo thing where she has a piece of the black bin bag / tarpaulin pushed very far up inside one nostril and this was something the police said had happened at another crime scene somewhere else… I wish I could find the links now to post here but it’s out there somewhere).

Love anything crime related. My favourites are Mr Ballen and Kendall Rae on YouTube. Watched a really interesting one yesterday from him about Tom and Jackie Hawks. Check it out if you haven’t seen it.

@HadaVerde

Re Billie jo Jenkins, have you read the theory of the homeless man who slept rough nearby? Referred to as Mr B.
Yes this is what I was referring to.

Which channel is this on?

Another true crime junkie here. I’m a big fan of the True Crime Obsessed podcast for a lighter (but always respectful) take on true crime.

HeechulOppa · 28/11/2021 18:50

Can anyone recommend where to watch true crime documentaries if you don’t have a tv? I don’t have a tv but stream online - I don’t really get on with podcasts and like shiny American tv programmes like Unsolved Mysteries

Being honest one of the best places is actually you tube! Just search the names of the victims / cases you’re interested in and loads of stuff will come up, lots of original news stuff and interviews etc.

Now TV has a good selection of true crime things but I find watching stuff on you tube and just googling stuff far better than watching programmes.

Netflix has loads - there’s a really good one about the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier called “Murder in West Cork”. She was a Frenchwoman with a holiday home in a rural part of Cork in Ireland. In 1996 she was brutally murdered and the short series looks at the events around the still-unsolved crime, I won’t say anymore at risk of leading you to a conclusion.

For further on the same case I highly recommend, again, listening to the Crime Analyst podcast which has been covering the case in its most recent episodes.

HeechulOppa · 28/11/2021 23:08

Thanks Bagels! I like to watch random ones so don’t have any true crimes in mind, but maybe if I looks a few specific ones up on YouTube it’ll nudge the algorithm (and start bumping Pokemon related content off my dashboard!)

And thanks too Cavemum, I’ll check that one out!

I think I've worked my way through every series going!
Does anyone known if there any new documentaries?

midsomermurderess · 06/03/2022 15:37

If you listen to podcasts, there is one about the murder of a young woman in Mackay, Australia. She had ended a volatile and emotionally abusive relationship and several months later was killed on her way home from work. The police were convinced this man killed her and doggedly pursued him but a jury cleared him in 2 hours. A coroner later ruled he was the only person who could have been responsible. It's called Shandee's Story.

I have mixed feeling about true crime. It is often fascinating but it is a bit ghoulish being so drawn into terrible things where people are still suffering terribly from their losses.

Georgeskitchen · 06/03/2022 15:54

I like these kind of documentaries. The cold case ones are particularly engrossing as new dna techniques have caught out killers who thought they had got away with it for many years . I always wonder how many more are sweating , waiting for a knock on the door
Also probably quite a few sweating since the double jeopardy law was repealed

SadieBaneso · 06/03/2022 16:00

For those protesting Sion Jenkins‘ innocence, there was a documentary on Ch5 a couple of weeks ago (available on catch-up) which featured the detectives from the case. They lay it all out, forensics and all. Police aren’t looking for anyone else in relation to the crime.

NinaDefoe · 06/03/2022 16:29

I remember that case well.

I’ll have a look at the documentary thanks.

NinaDefoe · 06/03/2022 16:31

Wow. 25 years ago...

Oneborneverydecade · 06/03/2022 17:03

I've just listened to episode 6 of 8 from the Crime Weekly podcast about Caylee Anthony. I can't believe that her mum got away with either covering up her accidental death or her murder. So sad

NinaDefoe · 06/03/2022 17:58

Sion Jenkins does not come across well at all in the press interviews in the days after the murder.

I didn’t know that pieces of black bin bag had been pushed tightly up her nose.

The black bin bag had been put down to stop paint getting on the patio.

Takeawaytonight · 06/03/2022 19:06

I've seen a couple of documentaries about JonBennet Ramsey. That poor little girl had no justice 😢

whoruntheworldgirls · 06/03/2022 21:43

I've just finished a 3 part series on c4 about the Moors Murders, absolutely heart breaking Sad
Just starting the Billie-Jo one Sad that poor girl

HeechulOppa · 06/03/2022 22:43

How weird, I was just thinking of this thread today! Well, since I last posted I’ve now changed my stance on podcasts and have very much been enjoying ‘Minds of Madness’

NinaDefoe · 06/03/2022 22:54

The Billy Jo documentary was difficult to watch.
The poor girl. Justice has not been done and I don’t believe a word of what Sion Jenkins says.
