He was 91. Sad news for musical theatre. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story and then wrote both lyrics and music for many shows. Send in the Clowns is a wonderful song.

RIP.

But what a legacy he leaves. Amazing contribution to the musical theatre. West side story was radical in its day. Follies, Gypsy, a little night music, into the woods, I could go on, all productions that have bought me joy over the years. RIP

KingscoteStaff · 26/11/2021 22:39

Oh no.

Turmerictolly · 26/11/2021 22:41

Sad but an amazing legacy. I hope they show some of his works.

viques · 26/11/2021 22:42

What a legacy. Sweeney Todd another one of his. I love the way every piece of work is at the same time stunningly original but recognisably Sondheim.

FlibbertyGiblets · 26/11/2021 22:56

He leaves an astonishing body of work.

Mumdiva99 · 26/11/2021 22:58

Gypsy is my all time favourite musical. The last thing I saw at the cinema was the NT version of Follies which was amazing.

A great talent has left the stage. But his legacy will live on forever.

A sad day for musical theatre. But what a legacy. Into The Woods is one of our favourites here. And I recently saw Follies which was incredible.

Nitgel · 26/11/2021 23:07

I recently saw Follies too, goosebumps all the way through.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 26/11/2021 23:15

Such talent - and what a legacy

Clawdy · 26/11/2021 23:30

Send In The Clowns has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever.

VienneseWhirligig · 27/11/2021 00:36

This always makes me smile. A sad day today indeed though.

Babymamamama · 27/11/2021 00:52

Hats off here they come those beautiful girls .....

Rest in peace best composer of musicals ever.

MilkTooth · 27/11/2021 01:03

Oh, that makes me so sad. He was an utter genius.

A Little Night Music is my favourite.

EvilRingahBitch · 27/11/2021 01:08

Coincidentally I found myself watching Sarah Vaughan singing Send in the Clowns on BBC4 this evening. I normally like my Sondheim performances a bit more pared down, but if you've got a voice and performance skills like hers you can do what the hell you like.

Also FYI Netflix has just started streaming the Imelda Staunton production of Gypsy - highly recommended.

Also if you haven't seen it here is Adam Driver's version of Being Alive - if it's Saturday then BA is my favourite Sondheim song.

What a loss to the world.

Sondheim's genius is immeasurable. He was a cultural giant up there with Shakespeare.

His lyrics are pure poetry. Some of the most special moments of my life have been spent in a theatre watching one of his shows.

I've seen all of them, going back thirty years. 'Merrily We Roll Along' is my favourite and I was listening to it today, the cast recording from the great London production of a few years ago. It started at the Menier then went into the West End.

Thank heavens we had the gift of his life for so long. May his memory be a blessing.

Saw West Side Story, the OLC of Sweeney Todd with Sheila Hancock back in the day and also Follies at the National a few tears ago. Brilliant.

What a loss to musical theatre.
