Hello, DH and I are keen to move aboard but are unsure where. He is a structural engineer, I am a nurse (currently work on a respiratory ward but have experience in A&E and as a Practice Education Facilitator).
Do any ex pats have any advice? I fancy Canada, DH fancies the Middle East. We appreciate it takes time and effort and are willing to put that in. 3 DC age 7, 4 and 3.
Thanks!

AGAIK you can’t emigrate to the Middle East - you’ll just be an expat for however long.
Spent 13 years in Abu Dhabi and Oman and agree with a pp that Oman is nicest. Or it was when we were there - quite a while ago now.

We left before dds were of senior school age, though - keen to avoid what dh called ‘overseas daughter syndrome’, I.e where parents stayed very long term, dds back and forth from boarding school, and later never feeling settled in the U.K. because only the ME country (of which they could not become a citizen) felt like home.
We have known a few whose dds experienced that.

Id also like to add that im a nurse and have investigated moving countries too. I found that the pay seemed great in the middle east, but the nursing style was VERY traditional. Imagine a Dr/Nurse relationship of 100 years ago in the UK. Extended practice isnt a thing. Tbh thats not the type of career id want. Also, rent/schooling/healthcare over there are expensive, which is why wages are so high.

With Canada there are A LOT of hoops to jump through with nursing, you have to pass exams to be allowed to practise there. The career is better though, its a bit like the UK where extended pratice etc is a thing. You also have to prove you have savings to be able to move there. I cant remember how much but its a fair bit. Maybe 10-20k? Its a points system - if you have enough points, you're in.

Overall though, out of those two options, as a woman and a nurse, id go to Canada. Id rather stay in the UK than live in the ME.

Israel is only place in ME I would live in.
Canada is too cold for me personally.

I think instead of focusing on country, you two need to agree on what the destination should have as in a list of factors like
-good schools for DCs
-accepting your qualifications/job prospects
-crime levels
-climate
-closeness to U.K. for trips home
-cost of living
-permanent or temporary move?

Then apply that to various countries.
