Should 90" wide curtains have a join?

roses2 · 26/11/2021 17:10

I bought some curtains which are 90 x 90. They just arrived and seem to be 2 pieces of fabric sewn together- not one wide piece. Is it normal that a 90" / 228cm wide curtains had a join? I was expecting each curtain panel to be one piece of fabric.

Thanks in advance!

It's Norma for a join. As standard fabric is 45-54" wide, extra wide fabric rolls are 60" and you can buy 'sheeting' fabric which is thin cotton designed for bed sheets in 90"wide rolls.

So to get a 90" wide curtain they would need to join 2 lengths.

Seeline · 26/11/2021 17:18

I think that is fairly standard. Most fabric is about 4' wide, so would need to be joined to create something nearly twice that.

CushionMountain · 26/11/2021 17:18

The standard with for curtain fabric is 137cm so yes it's perfectly normal to have a join in each panel. I've never come across fabric wide enough to make 90" curtains without a join. The 2 panels should be pattern matched so the join isn't too obvious though.

Yes totally normal! Furnishing fabric is usually woven and sold on rolls around 45 inches wide I think

Thank you so much! I am not impressed with the quality of the curtains I bought but wasn't sure which bits I am being overly fussy on. It's a satin fabric, has some minor pulls and I'm not totally sure the hem is straight. But when I read the reviews on the Dunelm website these all seem to be very common complaints so I'm not sure a perfect pair exist!

You could try getting them properly made to measure without joins.

Mindymomo · 26/11/2021 17:38

I’ve always had 90 x 90 curtains, never had a join.

SarahAndQuack · 26/11/2021 17:40

I wouldn't expect them to have a join.

I currently have a pair of 90" x 90" curtains in my lounge, they do not have a join. Have had a pair this size previously and they did not have a join either. I would not expect a join in this size of curtains and would not buy them if they had a join.

I got my 90 x 90 curtains from poundstretcher and they don't have a join

It’s very unusual for fabric to be 90” wide plus a bit for seams. That’s 7 foot 6”.

I don’t think you can complain about the seam.

My front windows are 90x90. Dunelm curtains have a join. The Bedeck ones don't, so it may depend on how much you pay for them as the Bedeck were expensive.

Designers Guild sell several fabrics (mostly plain) that are 300cm (118 inches) wide so it is possible to have wide curtains with no join.

I make my own, usually with standard width fabrics which require one, if not two seams. Last year I made a pair of geometrically patterned curtains that were 3 and a half widths wide so required 3 joins per panel! (Nightmare to make - so much pattern matching!)

If they are sufficiently full the joins in your curtains should be hidden when gathered and hung.

RockinHorseShit · 26/11/2021 18:33

Yes, the fabric comes in standard widths of aprox 150cm/59" & 114cm /45", so you always need 2 pieces to make a 90" width curtain

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 26/11/2021 19:28

For the people on here who don't have a join in 90" wide curtains, are they quite a short drop? If so the width of the roll can be used for the drop (if you see what I mean) so that you can make them 90" wide without needing to join 2 widths.

If curtains are 90" wide and 66 or 90" drop then the roll of fabric would need to be about 100" wide to account for edging and no join.

That's called railroading. Isn't that a brilliant term?!

That's a really good point! I'm erring on the side of keeping these curtains. They were £70 for 90x90. The colour is nice and now I've hung them they look ok. Not sure it's worth paying 2-3x more for better quality stitching that no ones going to notice!

This is unlikely to be possible if they are 90 inches wide. Fabric doesn't come that wide generally.
OwlBasket · 26/11/2021 21:20

Wide, long, join-less curtains are available and beautiful but are also hideously expensive. Always.

Ohhh, penny drops.

Sorry, like an idiot I had read the 90 and the cm in the OP's post as 90 x 228cm!

I expect mass produced readymade curtains they get the fabrics specially made up in the double width as it's all done in factories and a limited range of designs. I got some suedette ones from Primark for example that are all in one piece.

Made to order curtains or furnishing fabrics you buy are usually single width, it's not a fault to have a join, in fact they are often better quality.

Feelingpoorlysick · 26/11/2021 21:53

I've had several 90x90 curtains for my living room and they've never had a join.
