Ankle ligament damage

Ok so basically a sprain!

I went over on my ankle at work today it was extremely painful and I felt faint and sick- sent to hospital and went to fracture clinic and had an X-ray. Said it was a severe ligament damage and need a boot and crutches and signed me off for three weeks!

So now I am lying on the sofa and it really hurts- my whole leg hurts! Just aches why? Is it because I have held it in a funny way? It's also really cold.

I had two people talking to me at once and the plaster man said to take the boot off for showering and bathing - but what about sleeping?

I know it's only a sprain and I'm being pathetic! I will feel better tomorrow when I am over the drama!

This happened to me 35 years ago.

Ligament damage can take a bit of time to heal.

I took mine off going to bed.
I also elevated my foot above my heart so that it would take the heat of blood away from the ankle when on the sofa.

Ice it as much as you can.

It really does need rest so don't rush back to doing much on it.

At every opportunity elevated it and ice it.

It really is a PITA.

Unfortunately mine was weak for years after.

I wore an ankle support when it got better for extra support.

@billy1966 thank you so much. It feels much better now having been up on the sofa.

I am in Bed and the boot is off!

You will get more ankle-foot swelling & likely bruising over the next few days. Elevate your leg whenever you're sitting down, use ice packs, for 15 minutes every few hours, & take over the counter pain killers for comfort.

Have you been given a musculoskeletal clinic follow up/physiotherapist appointment? If not contact where you were seen to arrange this, or they may ask you to arrange this through your GP, you can do an GP e-consult for this (during practice hours).

I sprained both ankles at the same time a couple of years ago , my god it hurt I know what you mean about feeling faint and sick . You have my sympathies , hope it doesn't take too long to heal .

Thanks everyone. It feels better today so no crutches but husband nagging my me to use them - he might have a point!

Will get a physio appointment because I 'twisted it' a few months ago and it's not been right since.

@pumpkinpie01 how did you sprain both at onceShock

That must be extremely painful and debilitating

You may only need one crutch, I used a boot for a foot fracture a couple of years ago, & had to stop using the crutches as I found them dangerous Smile

Ah, you really have my sympathies! I have a weak right ankle after a bugger of a fall a few years ago, every now and again it goes pop and is really bloody sore for a good few days.

We have a crutch in the loft for such times, and I have a wide array of ankle supports - they really do help.

Hope it eases soon, take it easy and give yourself time!

cherrypiepie · 26/11/2021 09:26

@SlipperTripper appropriate username!

Thank you mine went pop the first time but not this time. Ironically I didn't got to hospital first time and I should have but it wasn't as painful as this time.

Be very wary of doing too much, too soon.

That was the reason mine was weak for years and I would go over on it regularly and be left incapacitated for days.

My whole foot to my mid calf would do black, purple and yellow.
Awful.

Give it time to heal.
If you do too much you may feel that it is hot, a sign that you need to rest as you are only doing more damage.

I of course didn't pay any attention to the renowned orthopaedic surgeon my parents brought me too🙄stupidity of youth, which I paid for over the next 15 years going over on my ankle at random occasions.
My ankle would literally go from under me.

The surgeon told me it would have been better to have fractured it, the healing is more straightforward.

Don't forget anti inflammatories too.

Thanks @billy1966 good advice. I've been hobbling round in the boot and just taken it off. To have a lie down and can feel it swelling!
