My mother is a one off..a real character..a victim of her generation and with many strange quirks and views. There's way too much for me to explain, but..she has always said since I was a little girl that around this time of year, loads of bad shit happens. Train crashes, murders, drownings..you name it.

Something (according to her) about the 'dark' time of year..The Pagan time of Yule and a darkness that descends.

Ok..she's a bit batshit..but actually, looking at what is happening in the news at the moment, and actually if I think back, there does seem to be an uncanny amount of bad shit that happens around November/December.

Does anyone else see this, or am I destined to follow in my crazy mothers footsteps?

There’s bad shit happening all the time.
Perhaps we’re just more aware of it at this time of year when the nights are longer

CliveAntichrist · 24/11/2021 20:16

I dunno..it just seems to snowball at this time of year (pardon the pun)

Maybe because it gets darker earlier. Surely accidents are more likely in the dark?

GodIsAVegan · 24/11/2021 20:19

Bad stuff happens all year round. Most of it happens because so many humans are horrible.

Badnightguaranteed · 24/11/2021 20:23

Darkness, bad weather, financial pressure due to Christmas, the strain of being cooped up, more festivities and therefore more alcohol.
And then of course we’re exposed to the news more. We’re inside, we’re watching more tv.. so it feels worse.

PermanentTemporary · 24/11/2021 20:24

That's interesting, I think of this time as the beginning of Advent and everyone being nice to each other and enjoying the time between the light festivals and Christmas!

iklboo · 24/11/2021 20:25

Square peg, round hole. Seeing a pattern only after something has been brought to your attention that you wouldn't have noticed before, or put any consequence to.

CliveAntichrist · 24/11/2021 20:27

I accept that we are more exposed to bad news these days.

I just aware painfully aware that in the last few days there has been a relentless reporting of murders, cruelty, crashes and natural disasters.

Lots of famous people will die between now and Xmas day one after another after another. Always happens

thistimelastweek · 24/11/2021 20:33

We've had months/years of natural disasters and human cruelty is never ending

So what's unusual in the last few weeks?

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 24/11/2021 20:36

It's just lack of daylight, poor weather, the first icy roads, that affects people's moods and judgement. Nothing spooky about it at all - just human reactions to a physically more dangerous environment and reduced daylight.

Interesting...is there a connection with this time of year?

Bowie, George Michael, Freddie M....

I think because of the connection she has made, bad things are more noticed.
Like, before you buy a Volvo you see no one driving them - but afterwards there seem to be stacks of Volvos about.

FindingMeno · 24/11/2021 20:39

And the Winter Solstice marks the time of year when we begin to return to the light.

GrandmasCat · 24/11/2021 20:40

Many of the bad things we are seeing in the news now actually happened in the summer, we are just getting to hear of that now because there are court processes in progress.

Buttons294749 · 24/11/2021 20:42

Well probably the worst thing to happen this year was the Taliban seizing power and that was August so im going to say no, your mum is not correct

PineappleSituation · 24/11/2021 20:47

Train crashes, murders, drownings..you name it.

Surely drownings are more common in the summer months, with people heading to the water to try to cool down in the hotter weather?

Quirrelsotherface · 24/11/2021 22:07

I actually agree with her. I've had two close family members die suddenly in the weeks leasing up to Christmas and unfortunately because of that I just feel this impending sense of doom at this time of year. It's horrible.

Twylar · 24/11/2021 22:19

I have heard of "The dark days of Christmas" before

GoodVibesHere · 24/11/2021 22:50

I think what's happening is that you are turning in to your mum
