I an a man, but completely useless at it.
I get a professional in!

Finfintytint · 24/11/2021 19:31

We both started off pretty useless but we’ve both got better over the years. We can manage DIY stuff between us generally but would call in someone for plumbing, electrics. We tend to do stuff together as a project.

Rockandgrohl · 24/11/2021 19:31

Nope...absolutely bloody useless!!! I ring my dad 🙊

Flamingolingo · 24/11/2021 19:32

We are both pretty good (though I prefer to supervise and direct), but we lack time so most things are done by professionals in this house. Our first house (pre kids) we did a moderate renovation with a lot of the Labour supplied by us.

RobinPenguins · 24/11/2021 19:32

No he’s shite, worse than me. Luckily my dad is great at DIY and has time on his hands to help fix stuff in my house, otherwise we’d have to get someone in for basically every little job. I’m trying to pay more attention when my dad comes to help so I can be a little more self sufficient but it never seems to stick in my head…

rrhuth · 24/11/2021 19:33

Yes when he reads up on things he can do them, but has no family training in this, so is not knowledgeable.

I am OK on the theory having learnt a lot as a young person watching parents but have no manual dexterity.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 24/11/2021 19:34

Yes. He can do most things and if he can't do something, his dad can.

AuraofDora · 24/11/2021 19:34

Yep! Saved loads got lovely results. Electricity a speciality but got all round 😌

Justcashnosweets · 24/11/2021 19:34

No, he's rubbish at it. But then so am I! He can do the basics, but anything even remotely complicated we get professionals in.

AuraofDora · 24/11/2021 19:34

Good not got*

nannybeach · 24/11/2021 19:35

Yes,has done everything in our place apart from the drive and double glazing,is a perfectionist says everything is a piece of cake. It's partly cost, partly on rare occasions we've used people recommended . or on sites like checkatrade and found they were dreadful.we've always had doer uppers,he's put in bathrooms, kitchen, heating, flooring. My first husband was useless.

RaisedByPangolins · 24/11/2021 19:37

No, I’m probably more experienced and have a bit more of an eye for detail when it comes to practical things. DP didn’t even own a drill until he was 44.

I always used to do the DIY along with XH when we were married and I’ve been doing all my own diy since we split 10 years ago, whereas DP has the money to pay others to do it and also has handy family members willing to help him out in return for a nice dinner (he’s a great cook!)

I’m sure you have other useful skills!

RaininSummer · 24/11/2021 19:38

No but he has a go as we can't afford the professionals. He has more of a go than me as I work full time and he doesnt.

RaisedByPangolins · 24/11/2021 19:38

Although on the odd occasion DP has done some DIY at my house I do find it a massive turn on, so maybe try and learn some basics!

Phrenologistsfinger · 24/11/2021 19:39

@DustyMaiden

He’s brilliant, but slow.
I’m ok but faster.
LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 24/11/2021 19:40

DS1 aged about four asked DH "what are you doing with Mummy's drill?? Are you allowed to touch it?"

So I'll let you all draw your own conclusions.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/11/2021 19:46

He's not bad but needs to improve before we tackle a full renovation project.
We've only done the kitchen so far and he's done a decent job - but the floor isn't completely level which annoys the hell out of me.

My dad can do pretty much anything so maybe I expect too much of my DP.

FOJN · 24/11/2021 19:47

I don't have a man now but of the many several I've had only one has been better at DIY than me. The last one at 40 something didn't even know how to use a paint roller.

whatstobecomeofus · 24/11/2021 19:56

Dh is brilliant at DIY. He's always surprising me with his skills. He tidies up after himself as well.

WhatCanIDoNext · 24/11/2021 19:59

No he's rubbish. I do what I can and we get professionals in for the rest.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/11/2021 19:59

Yes, he did most of our house renovations and has built a home garden office to a standard where people ask for the name of the company who did it. But I’m better at building engines and fixing cars.

McDuffy · 24/11/2021 20:13

Yes, mega. He's only early 30s and self-taught/taught by his dad. My dad was great too, so despite being big on the feminism, I don't do any DIY as I never needed to learn Blush I can't even pump my own bike tyres Blush

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2021 20:28

Grin

I'm good, DH is OK.

My mum was taken aside by my grandmother (DD's mother) and told "he's a wonderful man and will provide for your family but he can't do anything practical". My mum does all the DIY. Up scaffolding in her 70s!

LadyEloise1 · 24/11/2021 20:30

No. He's dire at it. He doesn't even know where the hammer and screwdrivers live. That's why I hide keep biscuits in the toolbox. If I put biscuits in the biscuit tin they're all gone in the blink of an eye and I have none to offer visitors.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 24/11/2021 20:32

@Ohdoleavemealone

He is okay but takes forever to get around to it.

Ditto!

BeyondMyWits · 24/11/2021 20:41

He's OK.. ish. Is good at a straightforward job. Fix a shelf to the wall, fine, put up some blinds yep.

Fix the gate latch where the screws are just turning in the holes... not a clue... Fix the curtain rail into a plasterboard wall... nada.... so I sort those sort of jobs out.
