So hacked off. Overlooked for promotion again

This job hasn't even been advertised, it's just been given to someone else. It's the third time it's happened this year and I'm so sad about it. Just needed to vent somewhere. Nobody ever leaves at my work either so jobs are scarce. Pity party here 😭

If you want a promotion, you need a strategy/plan

UsernameTaken76 · 24/11/2021 17:58

Have you spoken with your Manager so they know your keen to progress?

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 24/11/2021 18:04

Yes. I've been to see them. I think as I'm doing well where I am they want me to stay there rather than be moved on. I've given everything to the job and others who have been there for a shorter time have been promoted. Feeling shite tonight

Have you told your manager you want to progress? Have you asked explicitly why are not being given the opportunity to at least apply?

If you don’t get anywhere I’d start looking externally

immersivereader · 24/11/2021 18:07

How long have you worked there?

Rosemaryandlemon · 24/11/2021 18:15

OP tonight you can mope.

Tomorrow improve your cv. If you are an industry which works with recruiters get on to them. Get on linked in and start applying for different jobs.

3 times they have overlooked you. You’ve told them you want to progress. Have more confidence in your abilities and find a workplace that will appreciate you.

Too many women get taken for granted in roles. They often aren’t promoted because they are seen as invaluable in the role they are and employers know they won’t get someone as good for the same money.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/11/2021 18:19

I’d look to leave too, I’ve seen this happen at work too. They promote the new starter but leave experienced staff in the same job.

NiceCardigan · 24/11/2021 18:21

This happened to me in my last role and my manager was shocked when I resigned. He thought I’d stick around and carry on waiting to be recognised. Anyway they are much nicer to me where I am now and I’m pleased to have escaped from previous employer.

BarryTheKestrel · 24/11/2021 18:22

I'd leave. In fact I did in your position over the summer. I had been passed over one too many times and handed my notice in there and then. In my month notice period multiple other companies offered me positions because of the experience and skills my previous employer didn't want to see because I was 'invaluable' where I was.

AnFiadhRua · 24/11/2021 18:26

I find that self promtion is valued above all else. Demonstrating "competencies"
Things that are harder to measure such as honesty, hard work, resilience, flexibility, good humour and effect on over all team morale, they miss you when you're gone but completely take you for granted while you're there just conscientiously doing the job while others are sitting at their desk creating staggering works of great fiction to spin at interview.

IsDaveThere · 24/11/2021 18:35

What has your line manager said when you spoke to them about it? Did they explain why the other person/people had been chosen over you and did they give any advice on what you could do next time?

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 24/11/2021 18:52

I've been wanting to work at this particular school for the last 8 years as its very close to home, my children go to the linked school next door and the staff are lovely. I did a temporary secondment last year for 9 months as a promotion and did well but then when other opportunities came along other people got chosen. I'm overqualified for current role. I'm a qualified teacher and am working as HLTA currently. I know school budgets are so overstretched but I don't think that's the issue.

I would leave. This has happened in my workplace. Two excellent candidates overlooked, the third time it happened they appointed someone who is lazy, incompetent and just dreadful at the job. It's sent work morale plummeting, and the two who were overlooked have both left to take up new jobs. Management are now saying how much they are missed and have realised they were sold a pup with lazy incompetent ex colleague. They don't seem to realise the damage that has been done to the team as a whole though.

ftw163532 · 24/11/2021 19:05

When people are promoted without even the pretence of advertising and interviewing it's generally based on relationships not competence.

Expecting hard work to be rewarded with a promotion is naive, I'm afraid.

Either accept that you are going to stay in a less-desired role because this workplace meets your needs in other ways, or leave for somewhere that will give you the role you want.

ftw163532 · 24/11/2021 19:08

I wouldn't take it personally. Humans are just a bit crap like this.

You answered your own question right there. They are getting a qualified teacher for TA money. They will never want you to leave as they can milk you for teaching.

Update CV and move on. They will never give you a promotion.

Mumdiva99 · 24/11/2021 19:13

Do you know how desperate people are for supply teachers at the moment you could easily walk into a short term cover.
We need part time morning only teacher and can't get for love nor money....equally we gave a 3 day a week role with no applicants.....we gave also struggled to fill ta roles.....you should move on.

This! And ime all too often it's the useless man who is the best at selling themselves.

Interviews are really only a good measure of self confidence and not much else, I really think they're outdated and useless especially when it's an internal role. Why they use interviews to measure competency, rather than outcomes from work you've actually done in your current role makes no sense.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 24/11/2021 20:30

Well none of us sit at a desk. We teach, perform, make a decision every 3 seconds, clean up bodily fluids, manage other adults, deal with parents, come up with creative ways to do the impossible on a limited budget with lacking man (woman) power. But yes I get your point.

It's not the interview procedure per se that I want, it's the opportunity.

They won’t promote you while your giving them such a good deal.

Rosemaryandlemon · 24/11/2021 23:38

I still maintain you need to get a new job. Too many women stay in jobs where they are overlooked, under-appreciated, because it fits in with kids, it’s a nice environment etc.

I guarantee you the majority of men overlooked 3 times for promotion would be looking for a new job - irrespective of how the work environment/logistics with kids,

AnFiadhRua · 25/11/2021 07:11

Yeh, you sold yourself too short initially and that's their perception of your "brand" now.

HilaryBriss · 25/11/2021 08:42

So have you actually spoken to anyone about this and expressed your disappointment? Asked what you could to in order to improve your chances of being considered next time?

Djifunrsn · 25/11/2021 08:48

You’re doing a great job where you are and that is why they want to keep you there.

Nothing is about the “best candidate” these days. The company dh works for needed to hire someone and dh was doing interviews. The best candidate was white and male. Dh was ordered not to hire him - and to hire a female of any race or a non white male.
