What is the secret to toast?

I’m not a big toast eater. I mainly eat it at home when I’m feeling sick, like I am now. However, I can devour it in places like premier inn as it just so moreish

What is the secret behind toast like that? I mean it’s still bread, you put it on the revolving grill and then put butter on it and yet it tastes devine.

I have hovis bread (the white and red bag) and lurpack butter

Hospital toast is made from cheap bread and butter. We use sunblest basic. Yummm

StopGo · 24/11/2021 19:03

@Soubriquet

Sweaty bread Grin

I don’t think my bread has time to sweat. I pop it out and put the butter on whilst it’s still hot.

And there is your biggest mistake. Hotel production line toasters let the bread breath, domestic toasters don’t. Either wave the toast about or prop it up whilst you get the butter and spread of choice.

Also you can’t make good toast out of rubbish bread,

I associate toast with feeling miserable. The only time I eat it is when I can't be arsed making something I like. When I was growing up, though, we had an eye level gas grill and the toast from it was perfect. And only ever toasted on one side. Maybe I need one of those in my life. And maybe you do too ... 😀
I love bread toasted on one side. My way of recreating toast made under an eye level gas grill in my GP's house is to put two slices of bread into one toaster slot - perfect one-sided toast 😋

I've no idea but the toast at work is soggy and cold and regardless tastes amazing even after an hour or so as well as immediately. At joke it's barely edible. Super cheap bread and marg must be the secret

LockerShop · 24/11/2021 19:26

Two slices of toast in a dualit, pop them out and prop against one another in a pyramid for a few seconds for the moisture to evaporate. Butter slightly firm so it spreads more thickly than strictly necessary while melting.

Blackmagicqueen · 24/11/2021 19:30

A revolving grill? What hotel wizardry do you havw in your kitchen op? I just stick it in the toaster and as a pp said a good evenly toasting toaster thay fits full slice in is crucial. Then no skimping on the butter (light movements with the knife as always hate how how dh scrapes the toast when he butters )

Blackmagicqueen · 24/11/2021 19:31

have that & how x 1

Rushed msg before phone dies

Blackmagicqueen · 24/11/2021 19:32

Oh and proper butter, cannot abide margarine.

HumbugWhale · 24/11/2021 19:33

@Thegingerpig

Toasting under a gas grill makes the best toast. Got rid of my toaster years ago, never looked back.
Yes I was going to say this. Toasters are never the right size for the bread and the setting you need will vary according to the thickness and moisture content of the bread. so much better to put it under the grill and keep an eye on it.
Soubriquet · 24/11/2021 19:35

The revolving grill is the hotel one. This sort I mean

And what’s the best bread. People keep saying get better bread

Proper bakery bread genorously sliced gets my vote.

FOJN · 24/11/2021 19:42

Someone up thread hit the nail on the head, twice toasting is best for crunchy toast. The first toasting helps to evaporate moisture in the bread, take it out to release the steam, out it back in to brown and crisp.

sleepymidwife · 24/11/2021 19:48

Hospital toast is the best toast IMO. Shit white bread and loads of real butter at room temp.

That first cup of tea and toast after giving birth is seriously food of the gods

Blackmagicqueen · 24/11/2021 19:53

Oh god yes, i didn't even like tea until after I'd given birth!

Soubriquet · 24/11/2021 19:55

I really enjoy a cup of tea (don’t like coffee) and I went off tea during pregnancy with dd. It made that cup of tea after giving birth bliss

MintyGreenDream · 24/11/2021 20:04

You can buy the lakeland butters from amazon

drpaddington · 24/11/2021 20:23

DD likes to let her toast cool a bit before putting the butter on, so that it doesn't melt too much. It's actually really good!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/11/2021 20:28

An Aga.

And salty butter.

thedarkling · 24/11/2021 20:50

For really good toast you have to give birth first. It's almost worth it Wink

Talipesmum · 24/11/2021 20:53

I don’t think it’s likely to be the best bread if it’s in a reasonably normal hotel buffet breakfast. I think medium sliced rather than thick (which we normally have) makes it more hotelly. And agree about the drying it out thing (and the giving birth thing too!)

sleepymidwife · 24/11/2021 21:11

Haha I love making tea and toast for the new parents after a delivery. It feels almost cathartic!

GrandPrismatic · 24/11/2021 21:20

I love toast. My toast treat is done in the grill…lightly on one side then turn over….salted butter spread (thickly!) on the uncooked side (I know I know) and then toasted until the buttered side goes all bubbly and browns slightly. Sooooo nice

FinallyHere · 24/11/2021 21:28

It's quite the effort, but nowhere does toast as well as the tennis bat on an Aga.

StillWeRise · 24/11/2021 21:33

if you have not just given birth, then the best toast is-
made from good bread, sourdough or a crusty white both good in different ways
cut THICK
if it doesn't fit in the slot, cut it in half
not the first toasted...ie toast the first slice, it will be OK but the second slice will be fab
excellent butter, soft but not too soft, the aldi one with salt crystals is good
jam/marmalade, if used, should be home made, and is very nice but I do feel it detracts slightly from the purity of the toast experience
eat it quickly while it's still warm, therefore if you want more than one slice, put the second slice in while you eat the first one
