Would I be mad to wash 4 year olds uniform after each wear?

Just because of germs and she's been getting sick a lot lately? As in only let her wear it once then wash it?

@PonderingTotskeit

In Germany our relatives children who are at nursery have to wear a newly washed jumper/top everyday.

Personally I would wash it every day if you think there is a germ issue.

How do they know if something is newly washed or not if it's not dirty?
Mittenmob · 24/11/2021 09:23

Not unless it's dirty, stop creating work for yourself and it's not environmentally the best idea either in terms of energy consumption and of you don't overwash the uniform it can be handed to siblings or in a uniform sale.

Your DC is getting ill because it's normal to get ill at this age. Take vitamins, sleep well and wash hands is about the most you can do.

Redcrayons · 24/11/2021 09:25

I used to when mine were little, not because of germs, but because they were filth magnets.

You can’t catch colds off your clothes.

DS is 5. If I can get two days out of his jumpers or trousers I'm delighted but mostly the jumpers are covered in lunch and we have some bowel issues so trousers are often dirty.

I wouldn't wash it unless it needed it though. Hoping once he gets a bit more dextrous with his cutlery we might get more days out of jumpers.

PE kit only gets sent home in holidays so that gets washed 6 times a year. They aren't exactly getting sweaty at that age.

WaterBottle123 · 24/11/2021 09:34

No it's very bad for the environment which is a far greater threat to your child than a cold.

Kids need to get colds. To build immunity.

Also viruses don't live on cotton particularly well.

RoseMartha · 24/11/2021 09:42

My kids always change into non school clothes when they get in. School uniform then lasts the week. (Secondary age) Although shirts are washed more regularly.

When they were in primary they still changed when they got in. Sometimes they had to be washed mid week, depends how dirty they were.

LER83 · 24/11/2021 09:48

Not for germ reasons but my dc have 5/6 of everything and wear clean everyday. It all gets washed once a week with the rest of the washing so I'm not doing any extra loads etc.

DraigFach · 24/11/2021 09:50

Honestly unless you're boil washing them, germs are not removed from clothes anyway.

That being said, I'm amazed that people have 4 year olds that aren't muck magnets. I could tell what things my children got up to in school just by looking at their uniform at that age so every day was a clean uniform day...but not because of germs!

SwimSwim · 24/11/2021 09:52

We have 5 sets of uniform, so clean one every day and wash all at the weekend. I thought this was the norm!

LadyCleathStuart · 24/11/2021 09:52

I have 5 of everything so both my DC have a clean uniform each day. They are 5 & 8 and often come home filthy (paint, snot, mud, grass etc.). Just one wash load for all of them on a Sunday.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 24/11/2021 09:56

I was school uniform after every day at school because its usually covered in mud, pen, paint or snot. Do people really get away with wearing items for more than one day?

ADreadedSunnyDay · 24/11/2021 09:57

or food. I see I am not alone in this

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/11/2021 10:00

Tops, socks, underwear - fresh daily
Cardigans, jumpers, trousers and skirts - I aim to reuse them 2 or 3 days if clean. If not; no matter. Will wash. But I do like reusing them where I can.

faithfulbird20 · 24/11/2021 10:00

When she first started reception her clothes would get super dirty but after half term they've been okay. Only thing I've had to wash is cardigans or jumpers full of yoghurt or glue.

3peassuit · 24/11/2021 10:04

Depends on the uniform and how dirty they get. Heavy school tunics, trousers, jumpers were washed twice a week, lightweight summer uniform, blouses, cardigans and underwear daily.

stingofthebutterfly · 24/11/2021 10:16

My 4 year old's uniform is changed every couple of days or if it's visibly dirty. I don't wash it every time she wears it because that would be bonkers. I think she's more likely to get sick if she's too clean. Kids need germs to build up their immune system.

LuluBlakey1 · 24/11/2021 10:18

I wash uniforms every day. They have 3 each so it's not a faff.

Champersandchocolate · 24/11/2021 10:18

Just buy outfit for each day and do one wash at the end of the week!

ZACHSHAT · 24/11/2021 10:20

My DS still come home from school absolutely filthy every day. I'd love to not wash and iron their uniforms after one wear.

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/11/2021 10:23

@santabetterwashhishands

I wash all clothes after one wash 🤷‍♀️ Except coats. It's not like you have to walk down to a river these days just throw it in the machine.
This is me too. I’ve done the river washing thing. I personally think washer/dryers, flushing toilet and contraception have all equally emancipated women from drudgery.
Lockdownbear · 24/11/2021 10:23

I wouldn't wash everything after one wear if it's still clean. My 4yo can get a couple of days out stuff. My 10yo is a muck magnet.

But it's certainly not going to make any difference to bugs and colds that she picks up.

CornishGem1975 · 24/11/2021 10:26

What are kids doing at school? Mine never came back very dirty so could often get away with another wear.

TheGirlCat · 24/11/2021 10:27

If she's been getting sick a lot then germ mitigation is a good thing, so yes.

rhowton · 24/11/2021 10:28

I dont tend to wash cardigans every wash as mine hardly wears it, but I do change her polo daily, as I just think its nicer. Shes only 4, so not like she smells, but I have clean clothes daily, I dont see why she shouldnt.

foxgoosefinch · 24/11/2021 10:28

Not weird at all!

I initially bought 2 x sets of uniform for school as I had the fond idea DD could wear it several times before a wash.

Every single day she came out of Reception covered in food, glue, pen stains, dirt, sand and snot.

I quickly gave in and bought 3 x more sets of uniform (from eBay before anyone starts thinking I have money to burn) to save endless washing.

If you have a 4 y o who can wear any of their clothes twice I salute you in your success teaching them not to drop pasta sauce and everything else in sight all down themselves Grin
