Yes, put a blanket or something over them once strapped in, they'll soon warm up

DirtyDancing · 24/11/2021 08:23

That is the guidance. It is because you can't get the straps tight enough and they can easily slip out of a seat in the case of an accident. Straps need to fit just two fingers behind.

Dress in several thin layers and blanket over legs (over harness) will do until the car warms up.

Yes, that’s right. No coats in car seats. Cover with a blanket or coat on backwards over the belt if possible.

Yes, no one including children and adults too should wear a big winter coat in the car.

For babies have a look into start blankets.

FamilyAreEverything · 24/11/2021 08:34

Yes, you’re right. Puffy/padded coats should never be worn in car seats, both forward and rear facing, as they create a space between the harness and baby/child. In an accident the coat would compress and create space, making the harness loose, which could result in the baby/child not being held in their seat fully and causing serious injuries or even death.

Tuppence and crumble star wraps are an excellent solution as they are safe in car seats, warm and easy on and off.

No big coats in cat seats. You can't get the straps secure enough over them.

gjox · 24/11/2021 09:26

are these ok under the car seat straps?

If you’ve got a baby I’d highly recommend a morrck blanket.

BertieBotts · 24/11/2021 10:37

It depends on the age of the baby really. Personally I tend to find even the crash tested blankets can result in a loose fit. I've always found it's best to tuck the blanket over the baby after they are strapped in. That's easy to do in the carry seats, a bit of a pain for seats that stay in the car (but not impossible).

BertieBotts · 24/11/2021 10:38

Should say a loose fit particularly for small/young babies. They can work well for toddlers.

nannybeach · 24/11/2021 10:39

No one has mentioned the risk of overheating in a car also being a problem to babies. I don't wear a cost in the car, anymore than I would wear one indoors

OhGiveUp · 24/11/2021 11:25

For the reason that others above have stated, it's not safe from a possible accident aspect.
A lightweight blanket tucked in around them after strapping them in is better.
Consider how you would feel if you were strapped into a car seat in a padded coat so you resembled a squashed marshmallow.
