Which subject if taken at an undergraduate level could you never pass?

For me I would say linguistics, any explanation loses me almost immediately. Maybe Law, I'd have to be extremely bored to even begin to think about trying to care.

Computing intruiges me, I know absolutely nothing about it, it would take a long time for me to learn but hopefully I could pass.

Any foreign language

merryhouse · 23/11/2021 23:25

Fine Art

My son’s physics degree is complete gobbledygook to me. I don’t think I could do any stem subject.

If I were to do another degree linguistics or history would be front runners.

Maths. I did A level, found it extraordinarily hard and got an E. There is no way I'd manage degree level. Therefore probably not engineering or physics either.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/11/2021 23:28

Maths. I did great at GCSE back in the day, but my DD's Maths GCSE looked to have a lot of harder elements in it than we ever did. And her AS maths is like a foreign language.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 23/11/2021 23:29

Art or anything creative. I’d get thrown out by the end of freshers’ week.

amusedbush · 23/11/2021 23:33

Any kind of maths. I thought for years I had dyscalculia but I was tested this year and it turns out I'm dyslexic with an utterly garbage information processing speed. I can't see patterns or sequences very well and the report states that I did okay on maths questions where I had memorised things (times tables) but working anything out from scratch was a no-go.

I got a 4 in my maths standard grade (probably equivalent to a low C at GCSE) and didn't take it any further.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 23/11/2021 23:34

Maths, Physics, Art

JurgensCakeBaby · 23/11/2021 23:37

I've got two undergraduate degrees one in law and the other linguistics! Any kind of creative art based degree I would fail miserably at, my two year old's drawings are better than mine.

Changechangychange · 23/11/2021 23:52

Maths. I did further maths at A level and know I would struggle at degree level. I have a PhD in Epidemiology, which had a fair amount of modelling in it, and I was completely shit at that type of maths too. I understood it, just made loads of mistakes everywhere.

Comp Sci - I just have no interest in coding, and no patience with the level of detail required, which unfortunately is a major part of it.

Engineering - my DBro did aerospace engineering, which is basically a combination of maths and coding. Even he didn’t enjoy it, and he is far more mathsy than me.

I would actually love to do a language, classics, or something like geography, geology or ecology. I could get through an English, history or psychology degree, though I probably wouldn’t shine. Philosophy or Law would be tough, but I could probably scrape a 2:1.

Northernsoullover · 23/11/2021 23:56

Psychology. The subject is interesting but the research methods part of it makes me want to cry. I did a module in my foundation year and that was bad enough.

Anoisagusaris · 23/11/2021 23:59

Anything like architecture or engineering. And probably computer science.

adarkwhisperinthewoodwasheard · 24/11/2021 00:00

Chemistry. I just don't get it

Longdistance · 24/11/2021 00:04

History. My history teacher was awful, it was ‘here’s a book about X, read it’. I never even contemplated taking it in GCSE as the teacher made it so boring and uninteresting. I learn from dds history at school, it’s so much more interesting and engaging.

FictionalCharacter · 24/11/2021 00:08

Drama. I’m far too self conscious and awkward to do things like improvisation.

Kpo58 · 24/11/2021 00:10

Anything that involves writing more than a page.

Cattenberg · 24/11/2021 00:10

I don’t seem to have the right kind of brain for Physics, Computing or Engineering. I also have poor spatial awareness, so Architecture is probably a no go.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 24/11/2021 00:15

Anything I would have to guess interpret and answer in the way they are looking for and explain your thinking. like English. “What was lady Macbeth talking about when she said…..?”

Fucked if I know… give me that physics textbook please Grin

I’m good with anything that you just have to learn patterns and formulae and there is only one answer like maths or physics.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 24/11/2021 00:15

Oh yeah, definitely nothing with writing.
Bobsyer · 24/11/2021 00:25

Maths, Physics, Chemistry.

I did a module of Archaeology in my degree, I failed it twice and only just scraped a pass the third time. It was a BSc course and I was doing a BA so I can only assume the difference between the two meant I am just not cut out for BSc courses!

Shame because I enjoyed it a lot.

Ellmau · 24/11/2021 00:26

Maths, Computer Science, Fine Art, Japanese/Chinese/Arabic/any language with a non-Latin alphabet

groundcontroltomontydon · 24/11/2021 00:27

Happy to give anything a go but I'd struggle with History - that we're obsessed with it but we never learn from it would do my head in

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 24/11/2021 00:30

Maths, chemistry, physics, computer science...anything with definite right answers. I'm all about concepts, theories and creativity. My brain just doesn't work that way. My job is mostly a creative one but I dread doing my budgets and KPI reporting!

KloppsTeeth · 24/11/2021 00:32

Maths, physics, chemistry or the one I wish I could understand - astrophysics!

I do have degrees in Business, Law and Linguistics though, but still would’ve loved to be able to do astrophysics and study space!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/11/2021 00:36

But those subjects are full of concepts and creativity if you get far enough!Grin

If I was 18 again, I think I'd hope to be able to scrape a pass in most subjects but I'm not sure I'd ever have had the combination of aptitude and skill for languages with a different script.
