Child eyesight, anyone have any experience with Ortho K or Misight?

I’m -13 and do not want my son getting to where I am. It’s miserable and I hate it.

He’s 8 and -5.5 already. Both DD’s wear glasses/contacts but their prescriptions are lower and stable. His is rocketing, 2 months ago he was -5 and 3 months before that he was -4.5

My optometrist told me about the above, does anyone have any experience? I need to get the ball rolling ASAP as -6 is the limit for both of them.

I can’t remember if he has an astigmatism, I’ll have to check.

Ds14 has been wearing misight for 12 months. My eyesight is like yours and I could see him heading the same way. His prescription hasn't changed at all since he's been wearing them which would suggest they're working?
He gets on fine with them, so far we'd definitely recommend them.

Thanks Knitter. That’s good to know his prescription hasn’t changed Smile My only concern is with how young my son is and wearing contacts during the day if one falls out, or he rubs it out. I can’t be on hand to go and put it back in for him!

I have reservations about the Ortho K though, as wearing lenses overnight is ingrained in me as a big no no!

It’s so hard to know what to do for the best.

Have you looked at Miyosmart glasses, look a better less intrusive option than contact lenses.

Speaking to the optician the ortho k only manipulates the front of the eye, so not a long term solution.

Ortho-k and misight are more effective than miyosmart in trials.

@windowglazer19 they are all inducing the same response. You get positive defocus with them all.

We used ortho K overnight. My daughter got a terrible infection which has permanently seriously damaged her right eye and vision. 8 is far too young to manage contact lenses like this safely.

Sorry about your daughter. My DS won’t be managing them himself, I’ll be supervising every morning and every night and doing it for him if need be. I wouldn’t dream of letting him do them himself.

Which is one of the reasons the Ortho K were more appealing than MiSight dailies, because if he gets something in his eye at school and needs to clean them, I wouldn’t want him doing it himself.

Not heard of Miyosmart. But yes I’m aware it doesn’t correct his prescription permanently, it will just stop it from getting any worse so if he wishes to have laser when he’s older he can. Or when he hits 18/20 and his eyes will naturally slow down, he can just wear normal daily lenses.

I don't think it's anything my daughter did wrong. I did supervise it's just a known risk of wearing lenses at night. And we were unlucky. Going to happen to someone!

My DS who is also 8 (nearly 9) has just started wearing them. He has only had them for a few days. His eyesight has gone downhill very quickly and he loves sport so we wanted to find a solution which would avoid him having to deal with lenses at school and hopefully slow the progression of his myopia.

Trial at the optician was fine. He put them in straight away. That night it was tricky and yesterday it took him multiple attempts and lots of tears. This evening he managed it first time but he was very upset beforehand.

The first night he found it painful to open his eyes. Tonight he was ok to open his eyes and he has been fine each morning.

Hoping things will get easier soon. We have questioned whether we are doing the right thing!

I do worry about infection but he'd have that with lenses anyway which he would need to wear for cricket. At least wearing them overnight we can supervise cleaning etc rather than him doing it at school.

Ortho K manipulates the front of the eye, whereas Miyosmart and Misight lenses prevent the elongation of the eyeball that creates increased myopia.

Surely if you have young children these are much better than putting lenses in kids eyes.

hi, I am in a similar dilemma, myDS has been advised to use MiyoSmart lenses (specs with special defocus), I am trying to find anyone who can share the experience of using it for their child, but no luck.
May I ask what decision you finally took?
I know myself the anxiety we feel in this situation,
Hope you are able to find a correct solution.

My 9 year old son has been wearing mi sight lenses for just over a year now and finds them really comfortable. They have also been effective so far at slowing the progression of his myopia. The only difficulty we had initially was my son trying to master putting them in himself.

MakkaPakkas · 03/03/2022 11:51

My daughter wore myopia control contacts for about 9 months. She hated them and it was a battle every day. We've now moved to myopia control glasses. Unfortunately, her prescription is still getting worse after 6 months on the glasses (it also continued to get worse with the contacts). She hasn't had her main puberty growth spurt yet, so I am worried.
