What to wear on safari?

Just that!
Going to Tanzania in July and we have no idea!
Lots of early morning game drives and a hot air balloon so I know it’ll be cold, but what is the general consensus on what is acceptable?

I’m very envious, we went on safari in Tanzania a few years back and it was most definitely the best holiday ever. We wore layers, early mornings are cold so fleece, hat, gloves etc, which we removed as the sun came out and warmed things up. Avoid dark blue/black clothing as it attracts insects. We had zip off leg trousers which worked well. The safari trucks had blankets etc as well. A sun hat for later in the day, lots of insect repellant and good binoculars and camera. And enjoy.

We stayed in various safari lodges which were mostly pretty casual for dinner, so we didn’t have many really smart clothes, just a cool dress or two.

Long leg trousers and sleeves to avoid insect bites, layered with vest tops, fleece, waterproof. Take gloves, warm hat, sunhat with brim, good fitting boots and long socks plus Sandals or comfy footwear for hotel/camp. Space is often limited so it needs to go in a soft bag and have a small rucksack to hand with essentials for travelling from place to place.

Mosquitoes think all their dreams come true when I land in TANzania.! . leggings shoes.. a trip to primark for light pyjamas with wide legs that pass as trousers with t shirts.. long sleeve shirts.. and scarves keep the sun off.. vit b.. some people swear by the Avon dry oil stuff .. I thought tiger balm was good.. don’t forget insect bite cream.. and get all your jabs. ..

Ah I love Tanzania! You’ll have an amazing time. A head torch is handy, and don’t wear white for game drives as it can startle the animals. Enjoy!

A lion costume!

You're more knowledgable than me! First time we went was on honeymoon and I thought it would be hot, so had vest tops and little Safari shorts. It was FREEZING!!!! It warmed up in the middle of the day. A bit! We were lucky enough to go again a couple of years ago and I just took normal clothes - jeans, jumpers etc. Have a fab time!

Bellabelloo · 23/11/2021 21:54

Oooh! No jumpsuits! My sister-in-law needed a wee and had to strip completely naked to go behind the jeep.

GuyFawkesDay · 23/11/2021 22:10

Layers! I had vest top, long sleeved t-shirt/skins later, polo shirt and then a fleece. It was COLD at 6am!!! Then strip off the layers as the sun comes up.

Best buy was zip off trousers that convert to shorts for midday but realistically I wore them as trousers all day. Lightweight walking trousers are brilliant. Go for neutral shades. Also took walking trainers as we did walking safaris too.

Take with you:

DEET based insect repellent. Don't piss about with anything else when malaria is a possibility.
Small sunscreen bottles to top up during the day.
Hat. You will be thankful of it. Not a baseball cap, something with a brim!

Madcats · 23/11/2021 22:25

Keep it beige and green and grey if you are walking.

I have been slightly astonished that my Rohan UV50 trousers are 15 years old (but probably get 20 days wear a year still).

I used to pop a gilet on over thermals and a shirt. Look at Muji or Uniqlo for cheap tiny packable ones.

Zip off trousers for morning and evening game drives, lots of thin layers on top so you can heat up / cool down. You don’t have to be head to toe in khaki , but should try and wear neutral colours rather than bright ones. For your feet then trainers or lightweight walking boots are good as you’ll end up climbing in and out of vehicles.

Layers. The early morning drives can be cold. No bright colours. The animals can spot you and the guides won’t thank you for it.

We always go at Christmas time when it’s hot but even then you need light layers.
