Are you in a choir ?

I can’t sing, but I used to love belting out a hymn at church and school.
I’d like to join a choir, maybe a rock choir or similar, but do you have to do an audition ?

I am in Rock Choir and I love it. No need to audition, just come along and sing. It is great for people who love to sing but don't want anything too intimidating. We have loads of laughs and I have made some fantastic new friends. I think some people on here are bit snobby about Rock Choir but I have nothing but praise for it. Their online content during lockdown saved my sanity on many occasions and they do a lot for charity.

Also you can do a taster session for nothing to try it out. You only need to pay if you decide you like it and want to keep going.

I so want to do this but just can't bring myself to do it. I'm not brave anymore.

I’m in Rock Choir, or I will be once we go back in January, can’t wait, haven’t been for over 18 months.

Whether you have to audition or not depends on the choir. There are lots where you have to and lots where you don't. Even if you do have to audition different choirs will be looking for different things. Some will want trained voices and/or excellent sight-readers, whereas others will be happy with anyone who can sing in tune.

The great thing about choirs is that there are so many types so it's usually pretty easy to find something to suit everyone in terms of repertoire, standard of singing and approach (deadly serious or mainly fun).

Good luck on finding something to suit you.

I have just joined our community and choir. Really enjoy singing and have always wanted to sing with others. No auditions, no sheet music, just learning in the moment. love it.

HelplessProcrastinator · 23/11/2021 22:15

I sing in an acappella chorus. I hadn’t sang since school days and joined in my early 40s. We have auditions as we have to be able to hold our part with other parts around us (four part harmony). We perform without sheet music but get tracks to play to learn from so not a problem if you can’t read music. We have completely inexperienced people like me to people with music PhDs. I love the challenge to keep improving.

Our chorus is more demanding than rock or community choirs but any singing is fantastic for physical and mental health and I would thoroughly recommend it. Just find the right group for you and go for it.

Go for it!

Embracelife · 23/11/2021 22:27

Go for it
Many don t require audition

I am in Rock Choir. It sounds like what you’re looking for. I find it enjoyable because there are zero expectations, just to give it your all when you’re there, practice a bit in between rehearsals, and have fun - the more effort you put in, the more you get of it. I’m at the back in my comfort zone. No pressure to do the gigs so I don’t.

Another Rock choir member here. I absolutely love it, so good for lifting the spirits and meeting new friends. I’ve done some amazing performances too ( not compulsory but I definitely recommend) and next week I’ll be singing in Durham cathedral for the second time. No audition needed, just enthusiasm. We just finished our autumn term but why not book a free taster session in January and give it a go. I remember my first taster 3 years ago, the leader brought me to the front with him to watch and listen to the choir sing Hallelujah and it was incredible, I knew then I wanted to be a part of it

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/11/2021 22:39

I'm in a chorus like @HelplessProcrastinator - we may even be in the same one! You get so much more than just the enjoyment of singing together. I've been in choirs for around 12 years. The one I'm in now competes and we've travelled abroad for competitions. We've also supported various singers and groups at a variety of different venues. It can sometimes feel like a slog but the others get you through.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2021 22:49

I'd love to join a choir but I'm not good enough for the type of music I'd like to sing!

Metropolismoon · 23/11/2021 22:54

What type of music would you like to sing Toddlertea?

Bloodybridget · 24/11/2021 02:19

@Toddlerteaplease why do you think you're not good enough? Are you talking about a small chamber choir where you might be holding a voice part on your own or just with one or two others? Most of us are capable of improving!
