I know prices have risen but double? Fucking double?

It’s because global wholesale gas prices are really high. Gas suppliers are actually paying more for the gas than they charge you, so many suppliers are going bust.

Hoardasurass · 28/11/2021 17:18

I wouldn't recommend a variable rate because the price cap will be increasing to £1800 in April

dementedpixie · 28/11/2021 17:27

Yes but until then the variable rate is cheaper than any fixed rates on offer due to the current price cap. You can always change to something different later

@dementedpixie

Who are you with and are you in debit or credit with them?

How does your usage compare with how much you are paying?

@dementedpixie Sorry, only just saw later replies.

I'm with Scottish power. I've just checked my account and I'm £197.94 in credit. This year's useage is 26147kWh or £1598.15

And yes, my fixed rate will end and they're hassling me to pick a new one at double the price.
After the advice I got here I'm leaving it.

I've just moved in to a 3 bed flat, which had electric heating - then installed a gas boiler.

Scottish power wanted to charge me £390 a month for a DD.

I cancelled it & am on the variable rate. I'll phone in meter readings after 3 months of gas & hope for a better DD based on actual usage rather than projected.

Octopus were offering £156 a month so I may move to them.

It was a real shock to get the quotes!

Hello. Popping in to let you know that we're doing a Q&A with fuel poverty charity National Energy Action about these energy price hikes on Wednesday 23rd Feb at 12 noon. The thread is now open for questions here.
