How do you get the "not important but would like to do" stuff done on top of the daily life stuff?

There's loads of threads and great tips for cleaning and getting your home organised and clutter free but I'm ok with that.

House is in pretty decent state and I love decluttering but my problem is with life stuff, the things that aren't really everyday things, not really important, the stuff that's in the back of my mind to one day but that day just doesn't really come.

It can be all sorts of things like reading the box of new books I haven't touched, start using that recipe book I really wanted but didn't touch, start an exercise program, enrol onto my local college for a fun night course, buy new wardrobe as need a bit of a makeover.....there's loads but this is just some of the things from the top of my head.

I can't seem to get anything done outside of the daily chores and important stuff. It's making life feel like drudgery and is making me feel a bit low tbh.

You have to diarise it and prioritise it. It won't happen by itself.

Do you struggle to prioritise the non-drudgery aspects of life maybe?

I meant to add - I note you refer to this stuff as unimportant - I disagree I think enjoyment and fulfillment are more important than hoovering!

I’m the opposite! I think it basically comes down to your priorities and where you choose to spend your time.

Farmhouse1234 · 23/11/2021 07:57

I’m impressed with what you do manage to do!
Maybe some people take annual leave to specifically do the things you mention?

I suspect through, that most people never get round it it!

Schedule it.

45 mins a week in a coffee shop?

And then from there schedule to time to do the actual things. Assuming you are busy, you will have to dump/delegate/or reduce something you are already doing - but if it’s reading more, that could be as simple as dumping half an hour TV so you can go to bed or get up earlier

I put that sort of stuff on a visible 'hit list' up in the kitchen and eventually it annoys me so much I prioritise and then do it Grin

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 23/11/2021 09:45

First Sunday of the month I have an hour of action, I do those really boring tasks like shredding papers or hoovering under the bed.

Decide that stuff IS the important stuff, and prioritise it. People used to say to me they didn’t know how I’d ‘found the time’ to write my first novel, while working FT with a small child, but it was only that I prioritised it. I also stopped watching television entirely.

Oh see, I’m good at this stuff but need help with keeping the house in order 😂 I have a diary/planner and I list everything I want to do then schedule them in when I’m doing my weekly plan. It might feel silly at first to put down “read books” but honestly it’s the best way to get yourself organised (she says with a sleeping baby on her lap and a pile of washing to put away 🤦🏻‍♀️)
