Side benefits of having people over for dinner

We had people over at the weekend. It was good fun, wine was consumed and we've fulfilled our hosting obligation for a while. However there were a few other benefits I noticed that, despite the hangover, have made me happy today. Firstly the house got a really good clean and we also did some niggly jobs we never normally get round to like touching up some paintwork, fixing a couple of broken things, hanging some pictures that had been leaning against the wall etc. Secondly our guests brought us some lovely gifts and flowers and wine . Lastly I always make way too much food and despite being pissed I put it all in the fridge at the end of the night and today I've frozen eight portions of casserole which means quite a few nights where I don't have to cook after work. I don't really know what the point of this post is other than to say that I'll probably entertain more often as if nothing else it gets all the jobs around the house done that we normally wouldn't be arsed doing.

Yes, and we almost always end up having sex because we transform into witty and attractive people just for one night
I thought it was just us that did this 😂 Whenever we go anywhere DP likes to drive so rarely drinks whereas when we’re hosting he’ll get quite tipsy as he’s not used to it and after everyone has left we always end up having excellent sex

We hosted a tiny do at home for DS1’s 18th and DH changed the downstairs loo seat for a new one. It has made me irrationally cheerful. The old one was revolting.

I relate to this! 🤣

It's amazing how quickly you can give the house a really good clean when you have people coming over!

steppemum · 22/11/2021 22:57

before Covid, we had a regualr meeting in our house.

Same group each week, not for food.

I loved it as every Thursday between dinner and guests I hoovered the downstairs, tidied the lounge and cleaned the loo and basin.

When there was no group meeting, there was no incentive.

And people often brought biscuits or cake, so bonus extras. And we didn't have to go home at the end. And dh and I could both be there instead of taking turns to babysit. And our kids loved hanging out and chatting with nice people for first 20 minutes.

We’re hosting on Thursday and I’m already planning what to do tomorrow on my day off! I’m going to force my dh to deal with the paperwork on the kitchen table so it’s finally clear. I’m going to burn all the rubbish by the wood burner and clear the sofa so people can actually sit on it! Huge bonus!

DonttouchthatLarry · 23/11/2021 00:39

Yes we love hosting as it's an incentive to clean and tidy up - standards definitely dropped since the start of lockdown with no visitors! I also love the whole not having to travel home part, especially when it's dark, cold and raining.

Jumpingintochristmas · 23/11/2021 00:50

I love hosting.
The frantic deep clean, a gleaming house, twinkling candles and clinging glasses with a backdrop of cheesy music!

No walk or taxi home is definitely the highlight!

Why is this so true 😂
Kanaloa · 23/11/2021 01:47

You can buy/prepare far too much food then eat the leftovers because otherwise it would be wasteful.

Kanaloa · 23/11/2021 01:48

Also often people will bring desserts etc but you’ve already got some ready, so even more to eat the next day. If you drink I imagine it’s the same with wine/beers.

Turquoiseandgold · 23/11/2021 07:36

Yes very true - we're rich in wine at the moment as we bought loads and they brought loads and even though a lot was consumed we've still ended up with a nice full wine rack.
