My new carpet

hello
I have just had 3 rooms carpeted at around £1100. However looking at it i have two issues.
i) The carpet has little sort of fluffy strands of the carpet material. Is this a sign that the carpet is of poor quality ?
ii) I have spent the evening vacuuming up these little strands however the vacuum has left streaks all over the carpet . I used a hand held vacuum to do this. Why are there these streaks on the carpet ? is it due to the carpet quality ? I have never seen a vacuum have this effect on previous carpets which have all lasted at least years (picture below )

Why did you use a handheld vacuum not a proper one? It’s left marks because your hoover head is tiny. The strands I assume is just from the fitting - you’ve hoovered them up and they’re gone, yes?

It looks like nice carpet to me.

Vacuum it like you would mow a lawn so that you get even stripes.

Wool carpets can moult for a while after laying.

Cut pile carpets do show footprints, Hoover marks etc.

The strands are mostly gone - its time consuming vacuuming carpet with a hand held vacuum. We just moved and the house had nothing so there was a lot of basics to buy. I dont have a "proper" vacuum cleaner as we have been living on just floorboards for the past few weeks so things like beds and fridge were more of a priority. Today we got carpet in 3 rooms and i just decided to buy a cheap hand held vaccum locally to vacuum up the strands until i can afford a proper one . Might check black Friday sales tonight. Will these marks go away ? or do i need to vacuum them again ?

The carpet has little bits of fluff because it's new. The marks are because of the crappy handheld vacuum. You have not damaged it.

Is there a cut in your carpet looks like it's cut in the upper right hand side of your picture. it looks like a nice carpet though

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/11/2021 20:24

That looks like an offcut turned over to me @Saladcreamormayo.

OP - check Facebook marketplace for a reconditioned vacuum cleaner. There's a guy who services and refurbs them sells locally to me at very good prices.

No its not cut . There was some extra carpet left over from laying the carpet and that is what you can see in the upper right hand corner of the picture

Yes i also see that gumtree has vacuums for sale and ebay has them refurbished direct from the manufacturer. Its just whether this is the item i should buy next. The living room is still bare floorboard, there is no tv or sofa, there are no drawers (clothes is still in laundry bags and half the removal boxes havent been unpacked as theres no shelving ) etc etc

If you don't want to splash out on a hoover yet. I'd recommend a carpet sweeper, a basic Ewbank or Bissel is under £20. I use one upstairs in between proper hoovering and it does a good job.

Saladcreamormayo · 23/11/2021 00:14

oh yes can tell it's a piece of off cut now you mention it, il av to start putting my specs on!
I think they've got hoovers on offer in black Friday deals in asda at the moment.

NoSquirrels · 23/11/2021 00:16

Your carpet is fine. If you’re vacuuming with a small head on a handheld hoover, the ‘marks’ (the direction the pile is brushed) will look like short lines. If you have a regular sized hoover the ‘marks’ (direction the pile is brushed) will be larger - like lawn stripes as a PP says.

Don’t worry about it!

Look out on Freegle or Facebook marketplace or whatever for a hoover. Or get a Ewbank carpet sweeper as PP advises. Also great for drawers, sofas etc - you just might have to arrange a man & van to collect. Try your local British Heart Foundation for all sorts of secondhand essentials- often they’ll deliver too.
