It’s suddenly really cold snd I can hear my gas meter ticking…

I am in London and so far the weather was quite mild. I was congratulating myself on not having the heating on very much and still not being too cold. But it suddenly feels really cold tonight! The heating is on as I am working and DD is studying for exams but feeling quite guilty and imagining a huge bill at the end! Will definitely need to cut back on other things.

I have a scarf on and am under a single quilt on the settee. Lovely and warm.

Notcontent · 22/11/2021 17:50

A scarf sounds like a good idea! Might dig out some blankets and throws to use…

I hear you
I refuse to put the heating in while I'm having to work from home
I've been wearing my dressing gown over my clothes . Slipper socks over socks. 2 jumpers and a hoodie and fingerless gloves.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 22/11/2021 18:50

Hot water bottles. I have lots. And fill them up. And then when they are no longer hot. I take the covers off and use the heat without the cushioning.
Love them. I have central heating for the first time in ages. This house is so hot. As soon as I turn the heating on it’s too hot or too Cold. Never thought I would say it. But I miss my storage heaters. Where it was just a constant heat all day and I never had this problem.

Gilead · 22/11/2021 18:53

I’m North East, it’s really cold. I can keep fairly warm apart from my feet, can’t get socks on!

Nidan2Sandan · 22/11/2021 18:59

I'm terrible for not dressing warm enough and putting the heating on. But we bought a bigger house and so I need to watch my utility costs.

Loving the tips for staying warm! For me I hate cold arms. Anything else is fine (my nose is freezing cold all year round) but cold arms I hate.

shiningjustforyou · 22/11/2021 19:02

We've had it on for a couple of hours the last couple of days.
I've been in 3 jersey layers, cotton pj bottoms, socks and slippers most of the day. I was cold working upstairs so did come downstairs to work on the sofa under my blanket.

I hate spending money on heating and it gives me a headache.

DGFB · 22/11/2021 19:06

We have ours on for two hours in the morning, then put up with the cold while wfh til 4pm when the kids come home. Then it is on 4pm til 10pm. I know it’s a lot but I don’t want the kids growing up in a cold house and remembering it being freezing! My mum said the memory never left her. So we try to cut back elsewhere.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 22/11/2021 19:08

Im in the SE and have been freezing all day fortunately ive had jobs like online banking and insurance renewels to do so have been snuggled under fleecy blankets keeping warm. Heating got put on at 4 when the kids got home and i turned it off at 6.30 when i bought them up to bed. Ill be back on the sofa under blankets in an hour when the house cools down.

I set my thermostat at a certain level and if it drops below that, on my heating comes. You can wrap up all you like but you still need the air around you to be warm. Some Mumsnetters have an odd attitude to the whole thing.

JuneOsborne · 22/11/2021 19:14

I'm all about my heated throw. Best £20 I've ever spent. Well, not £20 coz I've had to buy another couple, so that when I want it, I don't have to wrestle it off one of the kids.

Also rate heat holders socks and legwarmers.

And, taking up knitting. Well cosy.

magicstar1 · 22/11/2021 19:18

@JuneOsborne where did you get the throw for £20? I bought one for a friend but it was £75….I’d love one but wouldn’t pay that much.

LaChatte · 22/11/2021 19:19

I'm in the south of France and it's getting quite chilly here. Our thermostat is set at 18.5 which is cold if you're not moving about regularly. I'm sitting here in mittens and a big scarf. I always wear my sheepskin slippers, damart vest and have a fleece over my legs. DH meanwhile is sitting next to me in shorts. 😂

Meruem · 22/11/2021 19:31

I’m on a payg meter (it was here when I moved in) and everyone always says they are way more expensive. Yet everyone I know paying monthly by DD is paying a lot more than me. My house is a 4 bed Victorian with single glazing so you would think it would be really expensive. I don’t quite understand it, but this is why I have never bothered to have the meters taken out. So, for that reason, if. I’m cold the heating goes on.

I actually probably spend more in electricity for my portable air con than I do on heating! I get so hot at night (peri menopause) that I use the air con a lot.

It's all got a bit competitive on MN about central heating.

In real life I don't know anyone who has a cold house or who professes to "put up with the cold". Entirely different if you can't afford it, but for most people on here it seems a kind of competitive misery.

WakeUpLockie · 22/11/2021 19:53

Well it is mid November!

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 22/11/2021 20:35

Agree the way MN is about heating is a bit odd - similar to the competitive thing of getting 10 meals out of a chicken and buying very few presents for their children for Christmas etc.

I have the heating in for 90 mins in the morning and have been switching it on for an hour or so early afternoon and again in the evening if we need it (which we have for the last week or so).

It makes sense to me to not keep letting the house get freezing cold as it takes more energy to bring it up to temp plus I'm now wfh so I figure the money I would normally spend on commuting can go on heating instead. I wrap up warm but refuse to be so cold I'm uncomfortable while working.

Same. I completely understand that there are many people who can’t afford to heat their homes properly, and it’s appalling. But there are also many people who have some sort of weird, virtuous attitude to heating. Being cold is miserable. I prioritise paying to heat my house adequately.
midsomermurderess · 22/11/2021 21:06

@ThePoisonousMushroom It's as if for some on here, not being prepared to be cold and miserable displays a lack of moral fibre.

MissyB1 · 22/11/2021 21:12

Our thermostat is set at 20 it’s a cold house and we can’t bear being chilly.

SophieJo · 22/11/2021 21:20

I bought one of these a few years ago and can’t wait to put it on when I get home from work, along with my furry boot slippers. Am as warm as toast!

It’s suddenly really cold snd I can hear my gas meter ticking…
JunoMcDuff · 22/11/2021 22:22

Last month's heating bill was up £20 on last year's, despite us using a lot less as it's been really mild.

We aren't poor. I'd definitely say we're comfortable, but I dread to think what this month's bill will be with how cold it has been today. If I'm dreading it, I can only think what those worse off may be thinking.

It's fine saying you just put the heating on, but not everyone is able to do that, particularly with the price hike.

midsomermurderess · 22/11/2021 23:48

As most of us recognise, McDuff.
