Where can I run away to alone over Christmas?

I won't even be telling anyone, can't be arsed with the sympathy and pity invites. Another year gone to shit. Fuck staying at home I just want to run away until it's all over. Any recommendations? Just somewhere I can go for walks I suppose and not be bothered by anyone. Anywhere in England.

Northumberland is lovely- especially the coast.

WildRosie · 22/11/2021 17:20

Upper Coverdale and Swaledale are about as remote as you can get in England.

3luckystars · 22/11/2021 17:21

You could go to Loch Ness, stay in a cabin there. If anyone invites you to their house just say you are isolating (it’s true!) enjoy your wonderful Christmas!!

Doofas · 22/11/2021 17:22

North Norfolk

Jennalong · 22/11/2021 17:25

A cottage somewhere lovely , maybe the Lakes ? It will cost you what with it being Christmas plus you might find it hard to find something with availability.

tanguero · 22/11/2021 17:41

Travelodge & Premier Inn in seaside towns are cheap on Xmas Eve, and Christmas Day. I stayed in the Travelodge in Llandudno, and walked the wild and windy Great Orme. Ate in the Wetherspoons (though this closed Xmas Eve).

tanguero · 22/11/2021 17:44

I mean it closed mid-afternoon Xmas day.

mdh2020 · 22/11/2021 18:08

I would definitely go somewhere by the sea. I love walking on the beach on Xmas Day. Alternatively, a luxury spa.

mapleleavesreturn · 22/11/2021 18:11

You can’t beat the Northumberland coast, beautiful walks all around there, forest, observatory, river aln. Hope you manage to find something!

EverNapping · 22/11/2021 18:11

I'm doing North Norfolk coast!

Kitkat151 · 22/11/2021 18:17

Agree...by the sea

LiterallyKnowsBest · 22/11/2021 18:23

tanguero, I had the most chilled out, peaceful Christmas at Victoria Dock in Caernarfon one year. Stayed at the Premier Inn, strolled the front, squirrelled away bread and cheese and wine from the Asda across the road. The hotel was almost empty. No one bothered me or tried to involve me in any jollification. Was glorious!

mrsrobin · 22/11/2021 18:29

I was going to recommend North Norfolk coast but I like the sound of what Tanguero suggested!

FabelTable · 22/11/2021 18:30

It depends what your normal is I suppose. I live by the sea, but I like central London on Christmas Day, just staying in a Premier Inn or something. I like walking round side streets and small parks and gardens.

ATTA45 · 22/11/2021 18:31

Can I come?

Hoolahupsaresquare · 22/11/2021 19:03

Do you have a set budget ?

Milomonster · 22/11/2021 19:19

Isle of Mull. It’s divine.
I’m going to the Azores for alone time and intend to sit in the hot springs daily.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 23/11/2021 05:34

Well, this is a welcome change!

Spending Christmas Alone threads are usually a sad invitation to a pity party - with me and probably one other lone voice protesting that it is possible not to be wrapped in global humiliation and regifted as a failure at life if one doesn’t do the traditional family fest.

So reading this thread is like the first sip of a fresh new bottle of gin on Christmas morning.

Roselilly36 · 23/11/2021 06:12

I agree with a pp, North Norfolk, Sandy beaches, coastal path walks, friendly people. Quiet villages. Ideal for an escape.

Galvia · 23/11/2021 06:17

@Milomonster that sounds bloody perfect. I've been dreaming of a trip to the Azores for years

Milomonster · 23/11/2021 06:30

Do it. I’ll help you. Might not work out more expensive than the UK.

Redsquirrel5 · 23/11/2021 06:40

The Lakes lots to do if you like walking, trip on the Gondola (Coniston) and see Ruskin house( very interesting) great cafe nearby.
Arts and Crafts house at Windermere. Trip on the boat from Windermere to Ambleside then have a wander, a drink at the hotel on the jetty and back on the steamer. Grasmere. Ullswater and walk up Hallin Fell a good one if you are a beginner and fantastic views from the top.

The Scilly Isles Tresco gardens very unusual.
Jersey lots to do and you can hop on and off the bus. Busy in St. Helier but quiet in other areas. The tunnels are fascinating. The Crab Shack if you like seafood. Unusual church nearby.
The Jersey Pottery

Northumbria -Holy Island, Bamburgh lovely restaurants and the castle. Alnwick- gardens and some of Harry Potter filmed there.
Beamish

Airbnb with a cosy fire in the evenings.

Yorkshire- Dales, Hawes, Askrigg All creatures Great and Small filmed here lovely little village great pub. Steam train at Pickering to Grosmont ? Sebergh - Farfield Mill

I would look for a cosy Airbnb if you want to be on your own. Walk in the day, fire at night, good local produce and a great book or two.
Lots of people go to these places on their own, you can speak to people walking if you feel like it or not.
Hope you enjoy it.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 23/11/2021 07:02

I’ll repeat what I said on another thread yesterday:

Airbnb has also been exposed as, let us say, an environment where racists can act with impunity. As someone with a clearly non-English name I would never, ever consider attempting to book accommodation through them.

If that matters to you, OP, I’d consider choosing accommodation that’s more accountable and better regulated.

MrsDThomas · 23/11/2021 07:18

You could stay in Caernarfon like a PP, walk in Snowdonia.

Milomonster · 23/11/2021 07:44

@LiterallyKnowsBest thank you for pointing this out.
