Worried about newly qualified driver!

So my autistic 17 year old has just borrowed the car to drive 40 minutes to get his second Covid jab.

He's a brilliant driver BUT it's mid November and dark, over strange roads for 40 mins, getting a jab which may make him feel woozy (first one didn't) and then 40 mins back!!!! Plus he's only just passed his test.

I'm kicking myself that I let him go on his own. I told him I was going with him but he didn't want me to. I know I should have insisted.

Don't know why I'm posting, I know I did the wrong thing... I'm just so worried

2 weeks (or was it 10 days?) after passing test, 18yo DS bought a car & drove 7 hrs to visit us. I expect your DS will be fine, too.

It's what mums do.
We worry.
He'll be fine. Do something to occupy yourself.

NCworried · 22/11/2021 17:22

Thank you!

I can track the car keys so will be watching that he arrives safely....

Don't do that. It'll become a sneaky habit and when he finds out he'll be annoyed and/or humiliated.

icedcoffees · 22/11/2021 17:43

You've 100% done the right thing.

He'll be fine. Please don't track him. He's not a child.

No, he knows. He bought the tracker himself and has control over who can access it, nothing sneaky going on.

I can't track his phone unless he lets me either so there is no invasion of privacy going on.

Anyway it is my car and I pay for insurance so if I did want to track it I think that would be fair enough to be honest.

My dd bought a car (against my better judgement) before passing and drive 200 miles back to university the weekend after passing. She's driven 500 miles in the last few weeks

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 22/11/2021 18:02

Then don't do it in real time. Only do it if you are worried after he is late.

You'll end up a nervous wreck otherwise.

MrsDThomas · 22/11/2021 18:10

You will never stop worrying. My DC drove 200 miles the day after passing. I was having kittens !

NCworried · 22/11/2021 18:11

He's on his way back, gave us a call Smile

Not long to wait now!

Thanks for distracting me Grin

Well my 18 year old autistic DD passed her test and the next week was driving 70 miles a day to and from her nursing placement for the next term, in the dark, in rain, in deep snow and in minus 25C.

And no - I would never consider tracking her. It's up to you to control your own anxieties

BananasAboutBananas · 22/11/2021 18:15

Urgh I was a ŵreck for the first few weeks after DS passed - it's so nerve wracking isn't it. Hope he's home soon 😊

freshcarnation · 22/11/2021 18:15

Good boy. It's tough when they first pass. My eldest went on a short drive the day she passed her test. Went the wrong way and ended up going through the dartford tunnel and back 😁

Shock

To be fair I was a shocking driver when I first passed, so many stupid mistakes.

I'm pretty sure he's 10x better than me already at the same age....

He's just pulling up!

Thanks for distracting me along the way Smile
