Civil service

Hi, I am in my second year at Ministry of Justice and would like to change department. I am interested in A DWP role.
Can I get maternity leave if I get pregnant a month into my new role? Is it classed as the same employer (civil service)?
Or do I need to make sure the baby is born after a year of being in my new role?

Thanks
Clare

Hey I am in a similar situation. Can you please tell me if DWP considered continuous service in civil service or does it ask for specific department service? Waiting for your reply

Meh2020 · 06/01/2022 02:16

If you are permanent member of staff any move, whether level transfer or promotion, is classed as an OGD transfer which means that your service is continuous and so the entitlement for may leave would be the same. However you should check the new department’s policy for mat leave as there maybe slight differences to the MOJ.

Hope this helps.

That’s amazing. Thank you so much @Meh2020

This was a relief 😊

CS employment is continuous from the first day you start regardless of how many times you move between departments. You absolutely don't need to start from scratch in your new department.

Your start date for mat leave and pension purposes etc is the date you first started work in the CS. Whilst some departments have different pay scales, which is bonkers, the CS is considered to be a single employer.

I'm nearly 35 years in and have moved departments and have managed many staff who have moved as well. You shouldn't have any problem at all! Good luck!

Thank you so much @BelindaBumcrack. This is such a useful info 😊

Can I just add be careful about moving to DWP I have a few friends who work there - very pressurised and low moral amongst staff. They are desperately trying to get out.

Actually in hindsight I agree with this. I did many years in DWP and it's earlier incarnations. Back in the days when we actually tried to help people. Before sanctions and health assessments etc. I wouldn't touch that department now with a bargepole.

What attracts you to DWP OP? Why do you want to work there? You do know that you can't change anything if that is your aim? Perhaps we can suggest other areas of CS work that might suit you?

NickCarters90sCurtains · 07/01/2022 20:21

Agree with @Krabapple. I have had a few family and friends who have moved from MOJ to DWP who have all said the same thing, you end up carrying the stresses of others, it becomes mentally draining.

Amam3 · 07/01/2022 21:52

Hey all thank you so much for the advice. I was already allocated through GSS and started few weeks ago so can’t really change now.

@BelindaBumcrack For future which CS departments would you recommend. I moved from ONS to DWP. Can’t comment on DWP for now but absolutely loved ONS.

Parsley1234 · 07/01/2022 21:57

God I was just going to comment on this to say why would you want to move there. Inept management terrible morale I was taken on as a WC as we’re about 23000 over 3 trenches less than 10000 left dreadful organisation can’t wait to move on

YorkshireIndie · 07/01/2022 22:02

I do a lot of recruiting as part of my role in the civil service and we get a lot of people applying from the DWP. I would think twice about applying for a job in the DWP.

But yes it would be considered continuous employment if you move from one department to another

Preeeettyprettygood · 09/01/2022 11:04

I can't help with advice on your questions as I only joined the CS a year ago. But as a few posters have said, I'd think about wanting to join DWP seriously.

I love my job but it is hands down the most stressful job I've had. It's thankless, has caused me depression and little money for what we do.

I plan on looking at other departments to move to. You speak to anyone at my grade and they will all tell you the same

Good luck on whatever you decide :)

Parsley1234 · 09/01/2022 15:22

@Preeeettyprettygood are you a work coach ? I’m a KEA from a work coach it has done the same to me and out of 23000 they have retained less than 10000 says it all

Preeeettyprettygood · 09/01/2022 16:09

Hi @Parsley1234, I'm not a work coach no, I'm a case manager. It can feel pretty soul destroying can't it! More and more are leaving, yet they don't replace them (not surprised haha) so we get even more piled on. Constantly adding more and more on to us.
I'm glad to know the majority of DWP feels the same ha

Parsley1234 · 09/01/2022 16:44

@Preeeettyprettygood yes CM is terrible money for the in-depth knowledge you need it’s very soul destroying and in my office there is no joy no laughter I’ve never worked anywhere lije it x
