Why do they transport glass on the outside of the van?

I really don't understand and I'm not sure if in missing something obvious but why do they transport glass either on open flat bed lorries or attached to the outside of a van?

If I was transporting something that could easily be broken by say a stone getting flung up by a tire etc I would transport it inside something so it was protected.

This is obviously completely not important in any way whatsoever.

I want to know too now you've asked.

Because it's usually too big to fit on the inside of the van.

handling it to get it in and out the van - more chances to knocking into something and breaking glass.

also size

They do carry it inside if it fits along with their tools.

If it doesn't fit they carry it on the outside.

It's pretty safe on the outside.

Saw a cyclist today with a surf board carrying frame on one side!! Genius!!

It has to be kept vertical so it doesn’t break. If you laid it flat it would break when you went over a bump.
It’s easier to manoeuvre vertically on the outside of the van than on the inside.
