So confused the 1st time I had covid nothing was mentioned about not being able to retest before 90days! This time the NHS have said I can't retest before 90 days as it could still be in my system. I'm high risk and work in a school......its riff at the moment I've only been back 1 week and worried if I get it again (still mask wearing, sanitising every second) How will I know I'm infectious and where do you stand ref: isolating. Can't find any information.

You can’t test within 90 days because your recent Covid infection can show up as active, giving you a false result:

For persons with COVID-19, testing is not recommended to determine when infection has resolved, when to end home isolation, or whether to discontinue precautions in a healthcare setting. NAATs have detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA in some people's respiratory specimens long after they have recovered from COVID-19 (>3 months).
(CDC)

It’s very unlikely to get Covid again within a short space of time - the research indicates about 5-6 months of immunity following infection:

The new coronavirus, Sars-CoV-2, has not been around long enough to know how long immunity lasts.
But a recent study led by Public Health England (PHE) shows most people who have had the virus are protected from catching it again for at least five months (the duration of the analysis so far)
(BBC)

So try not to worry.

They say that because there have been cases of people continuing to test positive for 3 months but they are not deemed a threat to others from infection pov.
However,if you are worried, I would get a supply of lateral flow from chemist and if you are now testing negative, which all of my family did during their isolation period, you can continue your twice weekly tests and if lateral flow tests positive in future you will know something had changed.
The problem then will be that if your PCR is positive, they might argue that that could have been from previously. If you are asymptomatic another time, at least you could go to your head and say you have lateral flowed positive, what do they want you to do. It is highly unlikely you will get Covid again within 3 months though.

I had it last December and knew about the 90 day rule so that’s not new. I work in a school - just went back once it reopened after lockdown and cracked on as normal. All you can do, really.

I am in the special position, caught covid at the beginning of September, missed the first week of school, now have cases in my class, 2 of whom were crying on me before being collected to go home, and I have a sore throat, temperature of 38.4 and feel crap. I have lateral flow tested which is showing as negative but then, the lft tests I did in September did too, it was the pcr that came back positive then. Now can't pcr till December.

Hippywannabe · 20/11/2021 09:20

Not special position, same position!

GnomeyGnome · 20/11/2021 09:22

Isn't it just don't do asymptomatic testing but if you develop new symptoms you should retest?

GnomeyGnome · 20/11/2021 09:25

Yes just checked gov.uk it says -

The 90-day window after a positive test
If someone has tested positive with a PCR test, they should not be tested using either PCR or rapid lateral flow tests for 90 days, unless they develop new symptoms during this time – in which case they should be retested immediately using PCR.

This 90-day period is from the initial onset of symptoms or, if asymptomatic when tested, their positive test result.

Hippywannabe · 20/11/2021 16:36

Just been for a pcr test 77 days after testing positive. My Temperature was 39 degrees, sore throat, cough, feeling unwell and diarrhoea so I checked online as those symptoms are new (Friday onset). It does now say to pcr test for new symptoms even if within 90 days.
I will keep you posted.

ScrummyDiva2 · 20/11/2021 16:42

It's not a new rule. It's been there since the beginning.

Hippywannabe · 21/11/2021 07:28

Test has come back negative but I still feel worse than I did in September!
