Soda streams

I like fizzy water but don’t want to be buying plastic bottles .

I’ve heard soda streams are good for that .

Keen to see if can get a Black Friday bargain, but not sure what model to go for.

The basic often seems reduced .

Anyone have one , and what would you recommend re model ?

Thanks

We have this one with the glass bottles because they keep the water fizzy longer. Use it loads and have stopped buying any bottled water.

Rocketpants50 · 19/11/2021 11:14

I was wondering the same, do they still taste the same as bottled water as DH likes Badoir water but I refuse to buy it, he also likes the lidl Italian sparking water but can't justify all that plastic wastage.

Presumably they all do the same thing - carbonate the water. I do not know anything about them so would they all make the water taste the same surely its all about the gas/ water?

MoriaRoseForever · 19/11/2021 11:18

These are the models, it seems the cheapest is often half price .

Trying to work out if that’s good enough . Sounds. Like the glass carafe keeps it fizzy longer .

We drink a lot of water , so presume would buy extra bottles .

I have one and love it. I just fizz the small 450ml bottle at a time. I freeze slices of lemon to always have on hand to put in. I haven't added any of the mixers to it yet but DH will just put normal cordial in a glass and dilutes with the fizxy water.

Brilliant for not using single use plastic.

I brought a basic one in curry’s back in the summer - I hadn’t considered it before but it was £40 with two extra plastic bottles - I find the bottle stay fizzy for about a day. I love and won’t go back to shop brought sparkling ever again

WhatHoMarjorie · 19/11/2021 11:53

I'm thinking of getting one too. I read somewhere, probably on MN, that the electric ones are best.

Obviously each mineral water tastes different because of the varying mineral levels in each, and you can't reproduce that. But we use filtered tap water for the Sodastream and find it's really nice. If I was served it in a restaurant, I would know it wasn't - say - Perrier- because of Perrier's distinctive taste, but I wouldn't know it was home-fizzed 😀

I have the Crystal which I got for my birthday when we'd just had our kitchen done, with the glass bottles. I use it every day and it's brilliant, has more than paid for itself (I drink a LOT of fizzy water) and saved hundreds of bottles going in the (recycling) bin.

The glass bottles are really sturdy - I've dropped them both full and empty on our porcelain tiles and they're not even chipped.

Rocketpants50 · 19/11/2021 12:17

Really helpful. Am going to hold out and see if I can find the crystal model in a Black Friday deal. Quite like the idea of making my cordial fizzy to.

BloodyAlarms · 19/11/2021 12:21

I have the basic one in your link OP. It's absolutely fine but you can't put the bottles in the dish washer as it distortes the neck and lid.

I go through 4L a day and I just add normal juice to mine - the flavours by SS are nasty ! It's one of the best things I've done to reduce waste/plastic.

I use this company for the gas - £40 for 4 cylinders and they drop and collect. Way cheaper and easier than anything else I've found.

I think it depends on how drinkable your tap water is? I live in a very hard water area and the tap water isn't very nice, so until I get a water filter my soda stream send like a real waste of money! But if you would drink your tap water then it's a worthwhile investment.

Soontobe60 · 19/11/2021 12:26

I bought one about 18 months ago much to my Dhs disgust. We would drink 4 x2l bottles of fizz weekly. He’s absolutely sold on it now and obviously we’ve saved the planet 300 plastic bottles so far! Cost wise it’s not money saving (unless you’re used to drinking cheap supermarket own brand fizz)

Bloodypunkrockers · 19/11/2021 12:26

I have the basic Genesis and I use it all the time.

The water is great. I use diluting orange to flavour it but usually have it straight.

I do like the look of the One Touch though

FinallyHere · 19/11/2021 12:40

We got the one with the glass bottles a good few years ago, mostly to reduce consumption of plastic bottles.

We use water from the filter tap. In a blind tasting, we just couldn't tell the difference between the pan pellegrano / Evian waters and the fizzy, filtered water.

All good.

If you go for a soda stream machine, sign up for the cylinder subscription from the start. DH spent a fortune on gas from Amazon where the deposit on gas cylinders is not returned.

MoriaRoseForever · 19/11/2021 13:14

So is the main difference on price between glass and plastic bottle ? And electric and press .

OP posts:
MoriaRoseForever · 19/11/2021 13:15

In terms of the reusable bottle they provide, so either a glass carafe or reusable plastic .

We had the basic one before but kept having to exchange it as the valve kept going. We now have the one touch and it's amazing! We use so much less plastic now
