Just walked out of the cinema appx 30 mins in as it was sooooo awful. Anyone else find it terrible?

@rookiemere

It was soooo boring. By the end all my sympathies were with Prince Charles and the Queen. There's already a thread about it in films - mixed opinions, small number of people loved it. Thankfully I have a cineworld card so I didn't pay for it Grin.
Yup, my Cineworld card does a lot of heavy lifting when films are poor.

I really liked it. If you were hoping for a Downton or The Crown style bio film then I can see how you'd be disappointed. It isn't meant to be literal or 'exciting' like a blockbuster film.

It's beautifully shot, stunning score, surreal. As it says at the beginning it's a fable based on a true story.

Swerve it if you don't like slightly indie or alternative films and need something really pacey to stay interested. See it if you do like something a bit unusual

Id also recommend Jackie by the same director.

I love unusual & alternative. I don't tend to watch "mainstream" and I actively avoid blockbusters.

It does look & sound beautiful. I went because I loved Kristen Stewart in Personal Shopper and I was expecting something like The Favourite. Neither of which is exactly pacey or exciting... So I honestly don't think the problem was my expectations!

I wasn’t sure exactly what the director was trying to achieve.

If it was sympathy for Diana I think they achieved it - and KS was pretty good at portraying her turmoil, I was surprised how good she was as I’ve only got Twilight to measure her by

But the sympathy was due to her being portrayed as having severe mental health problems. Not just the bulimia and self harm which are well known, but some some of paranoid personality disorder.

It did her memory no favours

I'm glad I didn't know it was by the same director as Jackie as Jackie was really disappointing too and I would've went in biased.

Did the people that hated this also hate Jackie? I loved Jackie.

rookiemere · 19/11/2021 11:57

@kierenthecommunity I agree with you, I came out feeling annoyed as Diana in real life was also meant to be charismatic and compassionate , and that really didn't come across as in the film she was demanding and rude to servants merely trying to do their jobs. That's not to say that I don't think Kirsten Stewart didn't do a good job - she put in an amazing performance for the role she was given.

I hated this and I hated Jackie. It was on tv a week or so ago and I was really looking forward to it but found it utterly turgid. Just like Spencer, although not laughably ridiculous like Spencer.
HotChoc10 · 19/11/2021 13:39

I loved it personally!

kierenthecommunity · 19/11/2021 14:02

And the (imaginary) bit where her pearls fell in her soup and she ate it actually make me gag 🤢

Sojo88 · 30/11/2021 10:40

Saw it yesterday - I liked it! Was not expecting KS to make such a good Diana.

EishetChayil · 30/11/2021 10:58

Let's just leave the poor wench to rest in peace.

I absolutely love going to the cinema, will watch and enjoy almost anything as it's the experience of being in a theatre, in the dark with no distractions and just focussed on the screen, I find it so relaxing and the most wonderful form of escapism.

I can't recall ever hating a movie quite as much as Spencer, beyond disappointing. I just felt irritated with the character, she was so utterly self obsessed, so determined to be miserable, tiresomely turning up late to every mealtime, attention seeking, tantrumming like a spoilt child.

Initially I liked Kristen Stewart's portrayal but the endless shoulder tilts, tearful wide eyes, irritatingly slight halted speech pattern - not quite sure how to describe this (why does she always do this - same in the Twilight movies, her mouth twitches like she's about to speak but then she doesn't) just annoyed me after a while.

The whole thing was absolutely dreadful.

WimpoleHat · 30/11/2021 11:03

It was…..bizarre. Just bizarre. And not in a good way!
