Quitting job to claim benefits

Odd1outagain · 17/11/2021 19:10

How do I check what monthly income I could have if I decided to quit my job?
I work part time as I have a severely disabled child, (13) up until summer last year his health was pretty good and stable, since then he has deteriorated and needing regular hospital admissions, and also major operations are on the horizon.
I feel more of a burden working then having to go off sick when he goes into hospital then they’re needing to find cover for me.
My husband works full time and I do most of the child/house care as well as work shifts.
We have a mortgage and usual bills to pay.
What I’m asking is if it would be feesable for me to stop working and claim benefits and become a full time carer for my child.
Morally it doesn’t sit well with me but I’m tired of working a night shift to come home to a poorly child and then stay with him while my husband works. I’m exhausted-sorry for rambling.

You wouldn’t be entitled to an income in your own right it depends on overall household income. So you may get universal credit top up if household income is low enough easy to check online.

You could claim carers allowance if your child ready gets DLA but only what £68 per week. But if your husband earns decent amount that’s all you may get. Sorry not better news

entitledto
Is a good calculator.
I can never get the link to work, but you can try different scenarios/hours/combinations.

As your partner works you are unlikely to get income based benifits, unless he is on a very low wage. Dose your child get DLA for their illness? If they qualify for middle rate or higher then you would qualify for careers allowance.

Ring CAB they can do a benefit calculation for you too.

www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators
Looks like this is a good place to start. Not sure if it covers DLA/PIP though.

You may be entitled to some tax credits. Do you get carers/DLA?

Tricked2003 · 17/11/2021 19:28

I'm in your situation, dc is on high rate DLA for care and mobility, I claim carers allowance and we get child tax credits. If you already get tax credits try and play around with the calculator........care allowance is classed as income for tax credits.

I’m a CAB adviser we recommend www.turn2us.org.uk for checking benefit entitlement. But we also can do a benefit check for you. I think in your circumstances getting someone to do it for you as it would be worth discussing your DC’s situation with someone to see if they would be entitled to a higher rate of DLA if their health is worse.

Thanks for the replies, he gets higher rate cate/ mobility. I used to get tax credits but since it switched to UC. They stopped. I earn too much for carers allowance unfortunately
