Lump near vagina

Mummyto2123 · 17/11/2021 11:35

I'm really worried! Last night while in the bath I was getting washed and noticed a lump near the opening of my vagina under the skin. When you press it it feels like a marble. I've read about bartholins cysts but I'm panicking it could be something more sinister. I can't get to the go until next week as I'm going away until Tuesday. Has anyone else had this?

It does sound like a cyst. It will go on its own. I get these ever since having children. Usually its hormone related for me as I'll get one just as my period is due.

oohmama · 17/11/2021 12:16

Deffo get it checked by the gp!

Better safe than sorry :)

Skinnyjeansandsidepart · 17/11/2021 12:21

I had the exact same - it was just a bog standard cyst and a course of antibiotics sorted it out, flucloxacillin if I recall correctlySmile

Thanks Ladies. Will definitely get it checked when I'm back if it's still there. Do they normally go away on their own?

Lots of warm compresses and salty baths, it'll probably go away by itself, if it doesn't get it checked.

idontlikealdi · 17/11/2021 14:24

Barthoylins cyst?

Piggyk2 · 17/11/2021 14:24

I've had this before. My skin is super sensitive and shaving usually sets things like this off.

Mummyto2123 · 18/11/2021 21:32

It definitely seems to be the location where a bartholin cyst would be but me having terrible anxiety i can't help but worry about cancer. Reading up about vulver cancer and bartholin cancer and it's making me so anxious. I'm away for the weekend and can't help but have this on my mind constantly

Speaking as someone who has dreadful health anxiety I can totally sympathise with how you are feeling but please step away from Google as it will give you worse case scenario for everything.

I had a cyst in exactly the same place. I bathed it in hot salt water, either in the bath or by soaking a flannel and holding it on the cyst.

It did come to a small head which popped but it didn't go down so I had to go to the GP and get some antibiotics which then took it down very quickly.

Paravia · 18/11/2021 22:54

Had a cyst earlier in the year and it was just like you describe - feel, location, etc. It was a bit scary as I’ve never had one before, and as I used to have health anxiety badly I know how you will be feeling.

Please don’t let it spoil your weekend (yes, easier said than done) because it sounds like a harmless but annoying cyst. Just make sure you call your gp when you’re back if it hasn’t already gone by then.

If it’s useful, this is how it went for me... it appeared, grew rapidly and then stayed the same size within the space of about a week iirc. Towards the end of that week, I’d started googling and had found the same stuff you’re seeing about bartholin cysts, and was pretty sure that was what it was. I then had a phone consultation with a gp who said to keep an eye on it over the next few days. It went down massively on its own in that time and then disappeared altogether. I think taking hot baths helped.

I really appreciate everyone's replies. I thought it had gone down yesterday but feeling it today I'm not sure. I'm trying not to obsess over it but it's so hard. Wish it would go away so I know it's nothing to worry about

This thread is timely for me. I discovevered a lump last night that sounds the same. It''s closer to the anus than vagina, and came up suddenly. So I'll keep it clean, warm compresses, see how it is in a couple of days before trying to see the doctor.

And I had a Barthoylins cyst years ago, that burst about 2 days after I began the antibiotics, was a bit of a mess.

Mummyto2123 · 23/11/2021 19:16

I've had a really bad day worrying about this and i can't stop poking and prodding it. I've now had a massive anxiety attack and can't stop crying. Was hoping it would have been gone by now or even gotten smaller

I had one years ago, felt it just before going on holiday. There was nothing I could do except panic inside. In about a week it just vanished all on its own. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 23/11/2021 19:26

Have you recently waxed/shaved?

I get these on and off, normally an ingrown hair, or a cyst as above.

Try not to panic, it is unlikely to be anything sinister, but if you are worried get checked.

walking123 · 23/11/2021 19:28

I had a Bartholin cyst removed recently (privately as the NHS only tend to remove if painful). I was similar in that I couldn’t stop worrying it was something else. Definitely get it checked but Bartholin cysts are very common and Bartholin cancer extremely rare.

TheLikesofMe · 23/11/2021 19:29

It could be a sebaceous cyst. I get these sods frequently.

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 23/11/2021 19:30

Had this. Cyst. It hung around for ages (over a year), occasionally being annoying but mostly just being there. Gynaecologist would have removed it if I'd insisted but didn't recommend it as (she said) it would likely have come back. It's gone now.

I was a bit freaked out over it at the beginning too Flowers

Mummyto2123 · 24/11/2021 22:52

I was hoping to go to the gp and get it checked this week but AF decided to appear so will need to wait until next week. Hoping by then it'll be away. Can't stop touching it it's driving me crazy

I finally plucked up the courage to go and see my gp this morning. Was really embarrassing as it was a young male gp that I had never seen before but he was really nice and said that it's a Bartholins cyst as some of you had thought. He also said it could stay the same, get bigger or smaller so just need to keep an eye out for it abcessing. Tonight though I'm starting to doubt, worrying if he could be wrong and it is something more sinister. I hate health anxiety so bad!

OP posts:
HelplesslyHoping · 29/11/2021 21:29

I'm sorry you're so worried, but glad you went to see the GP. If it was something sinister, it wouldn't appear so quickly and it would likely feel and look very different. If a GP was even slightly worried, they'd have referred you for further tests and examinations, as he didn't it suggests he's seen it 100 times before and feels very secure that he's diagnosed correctly. Try a warm flannel on it and bathe in salty water. It'll likely go away by itself and you will feel it changing, it just takes a few days sometimes.

Is there anything we can do to help or reassure you? x

Mummyto2123 · 30/11/2021 20:41

I'm trying my best to keep my mind off it and hope my anxiety starts to settle. Is there a chance the cyst could turn into anything more sinister? The gp said because i don't have any symptoms just to leave it so surely he would have said

OP posts:
Luredbyapomegranate · 30/11/2021 21:05

No - Google them. They are common and annoying but not sinister.
