Ocean at the End of the Lane at the theatre

Has anyone been to see this? Is it ok for children?

Theatre website says 12+ but from the reviews it sounds frightening for — anyone — a near-teen who gets anxious at night - might be fine but may well not be and I won’t be there to reassure.

So. Have you been and would you recommend it for children?

Bloody Neil blasted Gaiman.

Did your child go? I was just coming on to mumsnet to post the same question. I have an 11 year old and a friend has suggested this for a meet up (2 adults + child). My child tends to have slightly younger tastes so not sure if it would suit her. I don't know anything about Neil Gaiman.

It's amazing! The 2 things that are scary are a very threatening stepmother figure and a puppet 'monster'. I teach year 6 and would certainly take my class, but I would do a bit of pre-teaching about archetypes and the story themes, just to make them secure in knowing that it was 'just a story'.

Not seen the play, but the book was terrifying.

Ocean At The End Of The Lane in Southsea is my favourite street name ever though.

Not sure what your final sentence is about, but the book isn't something I'd let a 'scared-at-nightime' tween read, tbh. I think I had to wait until my eldest was about 15 before I knew she'd be ok.

CatLadyInTraining · 12/02/2022 21:54

My 10 year old did not enjoy it (we missed the age guidance when we booked; our bad). And there weren’t many other kids in the audience.

stravagante · 12/02/2022 22:06

It's not for kids. Some of the puppetry is quite scary and the stepmother disappears and reappears in a brilliant display of theatrical distraction, but it is creepy. I'd say 13+

Thanks for the feedback, I think we’ll skip it as my DD is quite young for her age.
