Ex partner still using my home address

deesdeli · 16/11/2021 14:57

My ex broke up over a year ago however I know he is still using my home address to register his banking, and various other personal matters.

I have not received any post for him as he has requested online statements and communication. He has refused to de-register himself so I want to take matters into my own hands.

Does anyone know if there is a company who can check who is registered to your address and get them removed?
Thank you in advance

If you know his bank etc, can you tell them? Don’t know if they’d take action as you aren’t the account holder. Any physical post can have ‘Not known at this address’ and go back in the postbox.

Is he still listed on the Electoral Register as living at your address? (Also often called the ‘Electoral Roll’). Check with your local council.

Ensure he isn’t on it! Maybe he thinks it is better for his credit rating?

Any mail you do get for him, not only mark as “Return to Sender” but also “not on the Electoral Register at this address” too.

@Pinotpleasure he didn’t register in the electoral register but I am not entirely sure what he still uses my address for and I want to make sure he isn’t still using it without my permission

You will be lucky. Due to gdpr they will only deal with him. The previous inhabitant of my house still uses my address. I tried to get my address off a few things and I failed. Only h3 can do that

Write unknown at this address on anything that arrives at your house and stick it in a post box.
Maybe (if you can afford it) get a solicitor to send a letter to tell him to change his postal address within (say 2 weeks).

There's not much you can do about it. You don't have any proprietorial rights over your address. You can get him taken off the electoral register, because the annual notification will come to you at the address. I think the next time the Royal Mail forwarding service comes up for renewal they will consult "the occupier" and you could object (but I'm not so sure about this). And if you think he's committing fraud you could notify the "victim" (the bank) and the police of a suspected crime. But I don't reckon you'll get very far.

I'm faintly sure that there is some correspondence that banks etc are obliged to send hard copies of, would need to confirm though.

Could you do an experian-type check? It would show if there are any joint debit/credit accounts and possibly any of his?

Alicetheowl · 16/11/2021 15:51

If he only uses online banking, he may just not have bothered. He may think it looks better for his credit rating if he stays in the same place for longer, or it's a nicer area. If things are amicable between you it might be nice to allow it.

Only problem is if he runs up debts at the address, and you have to send debt collectors away. Also it might impact your credit rating if he runs up debts at your address. And if you are on benefits it might lead to an investigation.

Half my mail goes to my ex, I still own the house so I basically don't care!

deesdeli · 16/11/2021 16:49

I know he is using my address for the purpose of obtaining good credit. What a cheek! I would prob be ok with it if he had asked but he hasnt and is refusing to change it.

I may well try experian however I want to know if there were any other services available out there.

I think you may be labouring under a misconception that your address is somehow a "good address" and confers good credit on him! That's not how addresses are used in assessing creditworthiness.

(Nor can his "badness" affect some sort of financial reputation belonging to your address.)
