Car vs Bike - insurance question

Hi all,

My hubby was out cycling on his bike last Wednesday. He was knocked off his bike by a car which caused damage to his wheel. He's fine. His bike was expensive and is used daily by him,so obviously he wants to make sure the structure of the bike is sound. We've used a local bike repair person over the years for minor repairs/servicing our bikes but he's working away for a few weeks (bike repairs is his second job) so won't be able to repair the bike, but has said that there's potentially more damage than it looks on the surface. The car driver has offered to pay £100 to cover this but our normal bike repair said this wouldn't cover the cost. The car driver is getting arsey with us and has said we have to take the £100 by tomorrow evening or he'll assume we don't want it at all - and has said he'll pay more.

Now... I think the best option is to go through his (car driver's) car insurance and deal with them direct. The car driver wasn't paying attention to what was around him which caused the accident (he swerved left to avoid a pot hole and caught hubby). Police aware and have a log number but said it's now a civil matter.

We've said to the driver to inform his insurance company and we'll deal with them. But I don't think he has as obviously he'll have to declare it at renewal. Hubby asked everything he should (name, contact details, reg) and took photos but forgot to check who the driver was insured with. How long does he have to report it to his insurers? Is there a way to check which insurance company he is with? And how can I check if he's informed them/force him to do so?

Thank you

You can find who they are insured with using the Motor Insurers Bureau and you can then contact the insurer directly to make a claim against them - they will then start the case and contact the insured to check details and so on

Ah that's great thank you @CMOTDibbler Obviously as it's a bike we have no insurance for that, if it was a car we'd just go through our car insurance.

Does anyone know long does the other party have to declare it to their insurers?

Hi. My hubby was knocked off his bike by a car earlier in the year. More serious injuries and bike was a write off, he had British cycling membership with free legal cover. Do you have legal cover on your home insurance? There are plenty of solicitors for cycling claims.

I would threaten that and make the driver wait for the wheel to be assessed

If you can find out the name of the insurance company you can report the claim you don't have to wait for the other person to do it.

Thanks @noodleone and @chichiwawa some good suggestions, will look into those :)
