Please suggest fantasy films and books for me.

I need something to watch and/or read. It's been a while. Something like Merlin, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc. (As you can see, I'm stuck in the past. I've no idea of recent ones). The more unrealistic, the better.

When suggesting, could you please indicate if it's a book or film/TV show. Thank you.

Sarah J Maas is a great fantasy author - there are three different series by her. Court of Thorns and Roses veers into YA style, but Throne of Glass series is great.

For film/TV, have you tried the Once Upon A Time series?

Echobelly · 15/11/2021 20:14

Books - The Tamir Triad series by Lynn Flewelling. Some quite dark themes but really well written, a bit of a forgotten gem of a series.

BleuJay · 15/11/2021 20:17

The lion the witch and the wardrobe, the chronicles of Narnia

I'll have a look through my kindle..

Have you watched The Witcher on Netflix?
Good Omens series on Amazon Prime is good too & funny.

KateyKontent · 15/11/2021 20:25

Sanctuary books by Robert J Crane. I think they are on Kindle Unlimited. I'm re-reading them for the 3rd time.

I also like Girl In/Out of the box series. That's more of a super hero thriller series, 47 books and counting.

I 100% recommend Terry Pratchett's Discworld books if you haven't read them already. Great characters and varied stories, which are very funny, and very clever. The books are all set in the same universe, but follow different sets of characters sometimes over several books, or sometimes as stand-alone one-shots, but you can pick up pretty much any of the books and read them without having read the previous ones. The first two books in the series, 'The Colour of Magic' and 'The Light Fantastic', aren't the actually the best one's to start with (they're a both kind of off in tone/style/substance/humour from what the series grew into). I recommend either 'Guards! Guards!' or 'Wyrd Sisters' as good jumping-on points.

PeeAche · 15/11/2021 20:29

The Age of Five trilogy by Truro Canavan.

Or, her more popular series, The Black Magician Trilogy. So so so good!!

PeeAche · 15/11/2021 20:30

Sorry, that should be Trudi. Stupid phone.

TerrifiedandWorried · 15/11/2021 20:34

David Eddings. Great books and loads of them.

KeepTwirling · 15/11/2021 20:35

Thanks everyone so far!Star

Yes I've watched Once upon a time. I enjoyed it but didn't finish it (Think I'm on the last season or so but can't remember the episode) because I got tired of the "...wants to destroy our love" line.😅 But you've reminded me to go back to it.

Have watched The Chronicles of Narnia. May rewatch it - Thanks for the link.

I couldn't get into The Witcher. I started the first episode but just couldn't finish it. Does it pick up? Perhaps I'll give it another try.

Thanks for the rest, I'll definitely be checking them out. Please keep the recommendations coming.

Any or most of Sir TP and Discworld!

MichelleScarn · 15/11/2021 20:38

Apologies @Sniv missed your post, but completely agree, picked up colour of magic from flatmate in halls, didn't get the love, later read Guards, Guards and was hooked! (See how they rise up!)

Harpydragon · 15/11/2021 20:39

Books, Terry Goodkind, Sword of Truth series. Fabulous story telling. I believe they was a tv series, but it was really bad!

Atla · 15/11/2021 20:41

I really recommend Ilona Andrews if you don't mind urban fantasy (Kate Daniels series is my favourite), Kim Harrison's Hollows series, Kelley Armstrong 'Bitten', Seanan Maguire - Toby Daye series - these all have romance as an element so depends what you like.

I quite enjoyed Holly Black's 'The Cruel Prince' series (but it is YA and a bit melodramatic!). Other authors I've read recently - Naomi Novik, T.Kingfisher, Charlie M Holmberg, AJ Lancaster, Olivia Atwood, Rachel Aaron....

Mileage may vary so maybe have a poke about on Amazon and read some samples before you buy?

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 15/11/2021 20:42

Yes of course all of Sir Terry Prstchetts novels, disc world or others.
Niel Gaimon/ SirTP Good Omens book or TV series.
Supernatural TV series.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 15/11/2021 20:43

Piranesi ( book)

Grimm ( series)

CathyorClaire · 15/11/2021 20:44

I've suggested The Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant (book series) on this type of thread before and got slaughtered because apparently they're depressing.

Stil bloody brilliant though....

Theflamingnerd · 15/11/2021 20:48

The Witcher (Series)

Books:
The Elenium series by David Eddings
The Mallorean series by David Eddings
Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson
Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks
An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabir Tahir
King Killer Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

Theflamingnerd · 15/11/2021 20:50

Sorry should have included the Belgariad under books (by David Eddings), you'd need to read that before the Mallorean!

TooMinty · 15/11/2021 20:55

Books and the first one is a series on Prime - Shadow and Bone trilogy

sleepseeker99 · 15/11/2021 20:58

Terry pratchets discworld - full on fantasy and whimsy.

Red Rising saga by Pierce Brown - sci-fi immersive future dystopia. Its slick, fast paced, full of gore, power politics and romance. Highly addictive!

DeathMetalMum · 15/11/2021 21:02

Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, I have read a few of her series and they are all really good.

Fashionablylate1999 · 15/11/2021 21:08

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is brilliant, and there is a TV adaptation of it starting on Amazon Prime on Friday too

Luckydog7 · 15/11/2021 21:12

Anything by Brandon Sanderson, he is a prolific writer working today. Mistborn is a good starting point.

A little different but Uprooted by Naomi Novak is wonderful.

Temaraire Also by Noaomi Novak, completely different from the above, written in the style of an Napoleonic naval war novel (e.g. master and commander) but as well as a Navy there is an airforce...of dragons.. i thought i had had enough of dragons but hell no!!

For watching, the BBC adaption of Jonathon strange and Mr Norel was great and only 6 episodes long i think. I found the book hard to read but the series gorgeous to watch.

ShinySquirrel · 15/11/2021 21:13

Books - everything by Robin Hobb. She's built an amazing world and everything is interconnected. Start with The Farseer Trilogy.
