8 year old with really crooked adult teeth

Just as it says in the title. Has this happened with anyone else’s DC? It’s both her upper and lower teeth. I don’t want to take a picture because I don’t want to make her worried something is wrong. She said today that one of her lower teeth hurts because her canine tooth is basically pushing it over.

She last had a dental check about 7 months ago and he said they did look a bit crooked but she was too young for braces but they have gotten worse since then.

Can the dentist refer to an orthodontist to see what they think?

claymodels · 15/11/2021 15:29

She needs a dentist as she is in pain.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/11/2021 15:29

You need to take her back to the dentist. She shouldn't be in pain like this.

As she’s in pain see your dentist and ask for a referral to an Orthodontist.

Our dentist can only refer to orthodontist once all the baby teeth are gone - no "mixed dentition". Do you know if she's at that stage yet?

dementedpixie · 15/11/2021 15:59

My dd was referred before she had lost all her baby teeth. She went annually for a check before she was eventually offered treatment. Part of her treatment was extraction of a baby tooth that was not coming out.

StickersStickers · 15/11/2021 16:15

I absolutely will get her a dentist appointment- was just wondering if anyone had similar circumstances.

I’m pretty sure she’s lost all her front baby teeth but not the back.

I might be able to offer you some reassurance. My daughter’s front teeth grew down sideways- hard to explain but the sides were showing rather than the fronts. Anyway the dentist wasn’t particularly worried and said she could have braces when she’s older.
We go each 6 months for a check up.
Over the past two years her teeth have been getting into a more normal position. The dentist explained that this is because her head- and therefore her jaw- is growing and the teeth are getting more space as she grows. I hadn’t thought that this would be possible because the teeth were so overcrowded.
She is likely to still need braces but the difference in her front teeth over the past year has been pronounced.

DS's teeth are like this. He got a referral to an orthodontist at 9 and he still had a few of his baby teeth. There was a long waiting list, since then he's had a check up every 6 months so they could gauge the optimum time to start treatment.

Orthodontist. This is me any my brother at that age, my front two teeth were ok but the two on either side overlapped them in front. My brother's were so crowded I think all six of his front teeth were overlapping on the top and the bottom. We were both bottle fed from birth as well.

We started seeing the orthodontist around then, my brother had a jaw widener (not as bad as it sounds) and then when we were a bit older I had 4 adult teeth and 1 baby tooth removed and braces top and bottom for 2 years. My brother had 8(!!!) adult teeth removed and braces for nearly 3 years.

It wasn't just cosmetic, overlapping teeth are really hard to keep clean so it's worth every penny to sort it out when you're young. I wore my retainer for a year or two at night and then lost it, but my teeth haven't moved around significantly and I can floss and brush my teeth normally. There is no way I would have been able to do that with my teeth the way they were when I was a tween.

justmetoday · 15/11/2021 16:35

I was that child. I had really crooked teeth. I had to pull 7 baby teeth at age 16 in order to get bracers. They just didnt fall out on their own Grin
My teeth are perfectly straight now and everything is fine. I got a night guard for several year, but only hd to wear the fixed bracers for about a year.

StickersStickers · 15/11/2021 16:39

Thank you all for the reassurance. Dentist appointment is booked for Thursday week and I’ll see what he says.

My sis and I had many teeth out as children , over several sessions. My Mom made it absolutely clear this had to be done under LA and we just had to get on with it, no making a fuss. 50 years later we both have nice straight teeth and far fewer problems with our teeth than most of our friends. Our wisdom teeth came through very early and are perfect. Some of my friends have had horrendous operations for problem wisdom teeth. Brook no argument, just get it done.

Posted on wrong thfead. Sorry!

willdoitlater seems kind of appropriate for this thread too!! Even if it did seem slightly premature!

Our DS 11 has crooked front teeth. I’ve been to the dentist, referred to an orthodontist but they will not put braces on him until he has lost all his baby teeth and grown a bit more. 12 is the usual age for boys. It’s frustrating as I just want them sorted. She said if we did it too early it would take longer and be less effective.
I’m still pushing though. Will go and see them again in a month. He’s not 12 until April.

They may start earlier with girls. Not sure at 8 though.

Bebeschitt · 15/11/2021 19:17

My DD's front bottom teeth almost faced each other at that age. She is 13 now and after 2 years of orthodontist treatment she has the most amazingly straight set of teeth. They can work wonders.

MillyMollyMardy · 15/11/2021 20:31

In our region they won't accept orthodontic referrals for under tens without significant overjets.
At 8 she's got a lot of growing to do yet, those are adult teeth in a child's mouth. She's likely to see some decrease in the crowding as she grows, her lower adult canines won't usually have come through yet but they will be pushing so that may be the cause of her pain. She is probably going to need braces based on what you are describing but it is too soon to judge that properly.
