Home insurance for 6 bed house - help!

My home insurance company, AXA, have just decided to levy a massive price hike as they are no longer keen on insuring houses with over 5 bedrooms. They are honouring existing customers but bumping the price by 30%. Eek! Does anyone have a recommendation of a reasonable house insurer for a 6 bed house?

Why don't you just do a price comparison online. No point is anyone recommending a company as its dependent on different factors.

AhhWoof · 15/11/2021 08:57

Thanks. I have - but I'd also appreciate recommendations.

NFU. I used to think it was only for farmers but I have my house inside the m25 with them and it was £££ less than previous insurers.
It can be painful process as they refer to underwriters on everything but worth a phone call?

Its not just price though is it. Some insurers are a nightmare to deal with so recommendations are helpful too.

Try Adrian Flux 08080 77 22 66 - don't know if they can help but they halved my premium which ,due to subsidence ,was very high .

They are specialist brokers .I found them very helpful and easy to deal with .

Good luck !

NFU or Hiscox. You'll get great service from both of them

DIKateFleming · 15/11/2021 09:16

NFU Mutual and Hiscox are usually good for larger or more unusual properties

rslsys · 15/11/2021 09:21

We use Hiscox as we have a lot of outbuildings. They are very good with ‘non-standard’ dwellings.

AhhWoof · 15/11/2021 09:27

Thanks all, that's really helpful!

We use Towergate who are good with non standard properties

byvirtue · 15/11/2021 09:33

Nfu and Hiscox are insanely expensive we also have a 6 bed property and the last time we got quotes from them it was in the region of £1.5k to £3k per year!

Ours is also with Axa so this doesn’t bode well for us either.

Sprig1 · 15/11/2021 09:35

Towergate and NFU are both v good. They may not ge cheaper but they are v easy to deal with and are likely to give good service if you ever have to claim.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/11/2021 09:38

NFU

Moooooooooooooooooo · 15/11/2021 10:16

We moved into a 6 bedroom house a few months ago and got a quote from our then provider (Axa) which was horrendous We then looked around and the cheapest (remarkably) was the Halifax.

We went from £1,800 with Towergate to £780 with Hiscox!

All a massive headache as we also have two land reg titles..... definitely need a person to talk to abs not 'computer sats no'. Not going to be cheap though!!

I tried to switch to nfu but they rejected us on the basis we had more than 5 ground floor rooms (rabbit Warren farm house with a pantry room, utility etc so it bulks up)….the local office however told me to call them next time as they’d never heard of it…

peridito · 26/11/2021 15:53

www.adrianflux.co.uk/household-insurance/ phone this lot ,they specialise and are very helpful .

Didiusfalco · 26/11/2021 15:58

You could go through a broker such as towergate who will essentially look at the market and have the policy underwritten by an insurer such as Axa or Aviva. An insurer is only as good as their claims service, which is why it is worth using someone reputable.

Hi
It might be safer and more effective to contact a specialist insurance broker on to help you with this. They will have access to niche markets for large homes and specialists products. Take a look at this link Home & Property Insurance - Tysers Insurance Brokers

Homes & Property

At Tysers Insurance Brokers, our Home & Property Insurance covers homes and residential buildings of more than £1 million in value.

Try the nationwide. They were half the cost of another who quoted for us and offered far more cover - including unlimited rebuild costs.

TheDogsMother · 20/05/2023 14:46

I got a quote from NFU and they were £200 more than the premium we had at the time and wasn't cheap. Non standard home with an Airbnb annexe in the garden.
