Skiing people, help me out with arctic clothing?

I’ve booked a trip to Tromso with 11yo dd the week before Christmas, to see the Northern Lights (hopefully). I’m not a skier so I haven’t a clue about outfits. It could go down to about -10 degrees, so we need to be properly clad. Any advice? I do know about base layer, mid layer and then some kind of ski suit, but there’s such a range, especially with outer layers - all in one? Separates? I have a very good North Face parka, so I think I’m sorted coat wise, but what to do about legs? And dd seems to be too big for kids ranges but too small for adults.

We won’t be skiing, it’s more mooching about and sightseeing, and we’re getting the Hurtigruten down to Trondheim so I’d like to be able to go out on deck and not freeze to death.

Any recommendations welcome. Thanks.

I’m not sure about quarantine at the moment, it’s so vague! If you go onto helse norge or fhi they are the best at giving the most up to date regulations. Right click and auto translate.
Don’t forget to have your vaccine passport!

JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 16/11/2021 05:38

Also if you are in Trondheim before 18th December the Julemarknad (xmas market) is on and it is absolutely beautiful 😊 it’s every day at Torget between 1st and 18th.

Unbelievably jealous!!
Mainly because I know this truly would be my children’s’ dream holiday

Please please report back op

And have a wonderful time!

I’m going to book a husky trip today. @Arcticlife - for the most amount of daylight, should we book 9am, 11am or 1pm? I’m guessing 11?

JimLahey thanks for the Helsenorge tip, it looks pretty clear that we’ll be fine. Unfortunately we arrive in Trondheim after the Christmas market finishes - damn!

Thanks Lentils, I’m so excited now. I haven’t been allowing myself to think much about it because I so expected Covid to stop it happening. Now I’ve only got a month to get organised. And because we get home on 22nd Dec, I have to do all my Christmas organisation before we go too, and I’ve got eight guests staying. I’ve done nothing. Shock

I used to ski a lot, including in Norway, and have lived in the middle of Canada. All the clothing advice is important but for me I could not get by without self-warming pads for both hands and feet

VenusClapTrap · 16/11/2021 08:15

Ok self warming pads are coming up a lot. I will order some of those. That wouldn’t have occurred to me, so thank you!

Those kids ski ones don't look very warm. I'd look for something down-filled. The Patagonia/North Face ones aren't cheap, but maybe stylish enough that she'd wear them again?

Or perhaps a hoodless thinner down jacket layered under a ski coat? It's a struggle to find properly warm down jakets for kids, especially at a decent price.

Something like this maybe (PrimaLoft is a very good synthetic down alternative)?

VenusClapTrap · 16/11/2021 12:49

Thanks for those suggestions. Quality stuff for kids does seem to be thin on the ground, unless you pay top dollar, which is painful for a growing child!

I do think layering a thinner down jacket under a regular ski coat might be the solution. Then she’d be more likely to get a decent amount of use out of them.

Yes, definitely either the 9am (then you'll get the light on the actual trip, towards the end, potentially amazing sunrise) or the 11am trip when you'll get the light as you arrive at the kennel (potentially amazing sunset when you're just setting out at the start of the trip).

I'd go for 9am... 😉

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2021 08:04

Thanks @Arcticlife. Done! I’ve booked the husky sledding and reindeer sledding package. Dd is super excited about the reindeer!

I’m still dithering about clothing 🤦‍♀️
