Who are going to be the working royals of Prince William’s generation?

I’m very much a republican, but with the Queen dominating the news today I began thinking about this.

The Queen had her sister and cousins supporting her until, and after, her children were adults. Charles has had and will have Princess Anne & the Wessexes supporting him. Prince George will presumably have the support of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

But with Prince Harry walking away, and the decision having been made a number of years ago for none of his cousins to be working royals, who will William share the workload with, between Charles’ generation becoming elderly and his children becoming old enough to take on duties? Surely they are going to have to backtrack and ask the York princesses or Wessex kids, or even the Phillips’, to formally play a role?

Doesn't Edward and Sophie help out alot? Not that much older than William (10-15 years?)

Justajot · 15/11/2021 00:40

Maybe they'll just do less. How many individuals do other royal families have doing 'full time' royal duties?

TheSpottedZebra · 15/11/2021 00:42

There will just be fewer, surely? The Netherlands seems to manage with just a core few, and hospitals still manage to open and the Forces still function.

My theory is that there is less 'need' for them now, as we have celebrities to do lots of the charity, ribbon cutting stuff that the royals once did in the pre-celebrity age.

There’s lots of talk of Charles and William wanting a slimmed down monarchy, so I just think they’ll do fewer engagements. There are signs that Edward & Sophie’s daughter is being ‘groomed’, though that may just be wishful thinking on the part of the press.

Another republican here. I'm hoping William and Kate will be able to cope pretty much alone in their generation as there are many overlaps.
Charles will become King in 4 or 5 years. Should rule for around 20 years considering the longevity of the Windsors. So by then W and K will be 60ish anyway and their DC will be able to step up for duties as their education will be finished.
I sincerely hope my taxes will never pay for the York princesses.

TheSpottedZebra · 15/11/2021 00:47

Royal patronage will decline massively though, but I doubt they are very effective any more anyway.

And it will be the odd thing eh Royal British Legion, Rspca etc that keeps its Royal link, but lighthouses and diseases won't.

They do, but Edward is 18 years older than William. Different generations. There is no one between the 39 year old William and 8 year old George. If George does as William did and becomes a full time working royal at 35, William will be 66 and Edward 84.

I think they’d always intended on Harry being there to share the ‘load’.

Does it matter if there are no working royals beyond the direct heir? (and even then, what does it matter anyway - the queen acceding to Boris Johnson's unconstitutional request to prorogue parliament during brexit made it abundantly clear she serves no constitutional purpose other than a purely ornamental one).

I can see how some people might like Princess Alexandra (for example) to come and open their community centre but it's not like it matters one way or the other if she doesn't.

None, hopefully, because they will have all been nationalised and got proper jobs.

Shadedog · 15/11/2021 07:51

Lady Louise is 17 and viscount Severn 14. They may be well into their 30s before William becomes king.

My siblings / cousins don't help ME with my FT, stressful job. I don't even have servants at home to help with the housework and childcare Hmm

I thought Zara was stepping up a bit.

Could be that George has bigger expectations at a younger age put on him. William was 'allowed' his Army and Air Ambulance time...

Celebs generally want to be paid, and/or do the flashy high profile stuff.

The less exciting bread and butter work done by, eg Edward and Sophie, would not be of interest to them.

Suspect there may be more use of the Lords Lieutenants.

Ozanj · 15/11/2021 08:13

William and Catherine have 3 kids. There is no need for anyone else which is why Harry decided to leave now as he was always going to leave at some point. By the time William becomes King in 10-20 years all his children will be old enough to take on some duties.

oh noes what are we going to do without minor royals to cut the ribbon on a new swimming pool in Ipswich. I have no idea how we will cope.
