Why so somethings still hurt under LA?

Is it just me or is it true of everyone?

I had a Breast Biopsy and was told it would be painless. It wasn't at all.

I had a heart loop recorder fitted under local. The most intense burning pain as it was fitted ever.

Now I'm having the loop recorder removed they've told me I will just experience a pushing sensation but no pain. I don't believe them at all. I'm petrified.

Weirdly having teeth removed under LA I'm fine with.

Is it just me? Am I a massive wimp? Or is something more going on here?

I had a filling with LA and it still hurt so they had to put more in.
Some people just need more than others.
It can depend on all sorts of things, natural threshold, previous experiences, mental health issues, Allistic levels, anything really. No I don't think you're a wimp.

Tell your consultatant and your anaesthetist what you have said here and how you were able to feel pain, and ask for a stronger dose of painkillers and a stronger dose of the local anaesthetic...and if you feel pain during the procedure, speak up and say, I feel pain

Thanks. The heart monitor hurt so much going in I scream like I was dying and people from the down the corridor came running to me. I've asked for it to be removed under GA but I have moved country, and the new hospital don't believe me. It is being removed on Tuesday and I'm so anxious about the anaesthetic failing again.

I'm similar to you, OP. I've been ok in the past re dental work - don't know if they used Novocain or lidocaine, but I've found lidocaine just doesn't seem to work for me for bodily stuff. Didn't work for my post-birth stitches, and then they gave me three lots for my breast biopsies before I told them to just go ahead and do it in my senses. [shrug]

Can they stop in the middle of a procedure like that if it hurts too much? Before when it was being fitted I was screaming and they didn't stop.

Push for a GA.
Teeth extraction under LA is still hell for me. Last time they tried to take a wisdom tooth out I got 6 injections and it still hurt so I ended up having it done under a GA. With teeth it can be that the injection isn't in quite the right place or that if you have a bad infection it just doesn't work.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/11/2021 00:38

"and if you feel pain during the procedure, speak up and say, I feel pain"

She was screaming last time and they still carried on!

ConfusedBoobs · 15/11/2021 01:08

I have tried pushing for a GA and have been told no.

I'm wondering if they would have stopped if they could. They didn't last time. Maybe you get so far in and just can't.

I've made the mistake of watching the procedure I'm having tomorrow on YouTube. I don't know why I did that to myself!

i have since found out that I am morphine resistant, ask for some tests, easier said than done i know in these Covid times

I recently found out that some genetic things affect anaesthesia, such as having naturally red hair. Some people require more anaesthetic due to certain genetic markers.

Yep, I'm a redhead I commented to a surgeon (under local) that apparently redheads are meant to be bleeders His "mmm hmmmmm" freaked me out Grin I wake up from GA very quickly and am then wide awake for days and local wears off v fast
amusedbush · 15/11/2021 23:57

@NotMyCat

I found out from a surgeon on Tiktok, of all places Blush

I had no idea but it’s so interesting!

NotMyCat · 16/11/2021 00:04

@amusedbush it gets you some odd looks. I had a 5hr spinal op. Walked to the toilet an hour after, ate a full meal and dessert, and demanded discharge 21hrs after waking up
Surgeon was HmmHmm "wilful. Stubborn"

Balonziaga · 16/11/2021 00:10

I had a LA for a hysteroscopy after trying to endure it a good fifteen minutes before breaking. Still hurt like fuckery.

Asked if it could be topped up and was told 'no, it will stop hurting in a minute' - it didn't.

ConfusedBoobs · 16/11/2021 00:15

@Balonziaga sorry you went through that. It's awful. Putting the monitor in I was crying/ screaming and I was shushed and told to keep still. I think that made it all the more traumatic.

Red head or hypermobile.

I'm both. I'm buggered...

That's appalling. Flowers

WalkingInTheAir13 · 16/11/2021 05:54

Poor you! I'm sure that level of pain can be prevented.

Perhaps next time* you can request the happy medium between LA and GA which is Intravenous Sedation. It really works well for some procedures and the recovery time is nothing like that of a GA.

I've had a lot of dental work done under IV sedation plus an endoscopy.

At one time, dentists were allowed to administer it but nowadays, it must be done by an anaesthetist (which of course, bumps up the costs).

*I hope there won't there won't be a "next time" Op !!
