Rats Nest

I suspect that I have a rats nest in the garden, behind some tyre planters. Can I just get rid of the tyres myself, or should I get someone qualified?

Further info - I'll be moving the tyres and taking them to the tip one at a time because I'm not very strong, but don't mind making the effort.

I'm not keen on poison as there have been sightings of things like foxes and herons so not only do I want to avoid making the rats suffer, but I don't want them in the local food chain. Peppermint oil isn't working.

Get someone in. Rats are one of the rodents your LA will deal with. Also, they, or a private contractor, should deal with them as humanely as possible, which may not be possible if you do it yourself

Rats don't like change, unlike mice who will happily work around any changes you introduce. If you remove the tyres and make changes every day they'll move on of their own accord.

@ChampagneCommunist Our LA is very limp dealing with rats. They also charge a lot. There are always rats in our street for a number of reasons and the council have dodged any responsibility so far.

I may give them a call, though, and see what they think.

@dudsville that suits my temperament and, to be honest, my physical abilities. But if I do a little every day, and bang around, I'm hoping that they'll find somewhere else.

To be honest, when I've seen them, they look sort of cute!

They are cute, and serve a purpose and have a right to live, much like hedghhogs! But we don't want loads, hope your stomping around brings you results! It's been useful for us. We live somewhat rurally and get them from time to time. It's the mice that we find bed in, but we do have bird feeders, which mice love!
