Considering leaving teaching - what do I do next?

Hi everyone,

I have been a secondary school teacher for nearly a decade and am considering leaving teaching due to a number of reasons - I am just at the thinking about it stage but I wondered if anyone had done this and what they do now? I used to work in PR (straight out of uni) and absolutely hated it. I have loved teaching but I am getting itchy feet - would love to hear people’s thoughts and experiences if anything similar.

Thank you
Smile

I was a teacher many many moons ago, teaching is a skill that you can carry with you in lots of roles.

Maybe have a look at adult training where you go on to firms and deliver training which is relevant to that company. If you have the skill of teaching you can literally teach anything.

Eg. our old firm brought in a company to help us deliver an 'attitudes and behaviour at work - work shop' to the employees ( around 1000) The trainer was briefed by the company what they wanted, she built a workshop up to teach us how to deliver that to our staff. She was on £900 a day she was with us for 12 days. She was also a ex school teacher.

If you can teach - you will always get enjoyment out of teaching in some capacity.

Have you thought of careers work? I’m a careers consultant in a uni and the role involves 1-2-1 guidance sessions, designing and delivering careers workshops (some in-curriculum) and working alongside academics to increase student employability. There are a few ex teachers in our department as lots of transferable skills.

Im just about to leave my job as a retail manager (same company for 20 years) and join the civil service in a job i never knew existed.
You will have so many transferable skills, have a look on sites like Indeed and see if anything takes your fancy.

I'm thinking about it but I don't have a clue what I'd go and do.

Lots of charities have education roles - could be worth looking into.

I've just done it! Moved into a admin role in the NHS, I love it!
