West End theatre - can some please explain?

I've been several times to west end theatre year late ago maybe 2010-2014 (so not in the dark ages)

At that time I bought some tickets from a random 3rd party stall and some tickets booked online and some booked in the day from the box office. They were dear but not extortionate maybe (£50 each)

I seem to remember that if a show has only just opened it is impossible to get discounted tickets and that it will be expensive? Is that correct?

I'd like to see Back to the Future (no idea what the reviews are like - I'm not really bothered as it's one of the few dh would see although I would check it's not been panned before I bought)

The cheapest seats are 19.75 but there are in the gods and I did that once and regretted it (couldn't see and too steep). Then the next ones are 39.50 and I still wouldn't want these. Looking at £89 for a reasonable seat and even then threatened monkey says not suitable for tall people dh near 6ft might not cope)

What shows can I get reasonably priced tickets for? Not in the gods, and aisle seat and not cramped for a. 6 footer!

I love seats in the boxes for most theatres. They're normally pretty cheap because you have a side-on view, but you're closer to the action than you are in the front seat of the dress circle and you have far more leg room. I'm only small and don't need the legroom but I like them because I'm a chronic fidgetter and it makes me self-conscious if I'm shoulder to shoulder with a stranger.

Brilliant thanks everyone; what a great amount of expertise there is in Mumsnet!

BTTF sound like it will be perfect for us and will have a look at all the reccos.

We have to go with Saturday or Sunday as tied to a weekend.

We both love the film as (pretty sure everyone around 40 does) and I love musicals but DH they are not his thing be he agreed to this one instantly. Sounds like the ending t will be a spectacle too! Will go do a bit more research!

I'd also love to see lion king and though it would be cheaper as long running but seems I am way of the mark!

I’m keeping an eye out for Luzia tickets at RAH - has anyone been? Is it worth it?

Unfortunately Lion King is very rarely discounted. Only on Kidsweek & New Year Sale usually. (Dd works at the Lyceum).

Comefromaway · 14/11/2021 18:16

She says the view from the grand circle is still good though.

@Comefromaway thank you for inside Intel!

Have you joined 'Families that theatre' on Facebook? They have excellent tips and members often post when flash sales are on. They also have pinned posts with recommendation's for eating and the theatre lotteries.

Society Of London Theatre (SOLT) run a promotion in the new year and seats are £20/30/40 for most of the West End shows and the sale starts around 10/12/21. Martin Lewis explained it all in Money Saing Expert. Seen Lion King, Legally Blonde, Wicked and mo're over the years. Second Show Film First, off to see Deacon Blue this week for less than a fiver.

Just to let you know in case google doesn’t pick it up GILT has been re-named New Year Sale.

Marking this for future reference! MN is wonderful.

£100 is the going rate for half decent (bit great) west end, it's £75 in regional theatres for free rear stalls these days!

Sorry theatre is dear. There's offers for cheaper tickets sometimes, I've bought good seats for less than half price on the day fir less popular shows and plays are usually cheaper

MareofBeasttown · 14/11/2021 18:47

I saw "Six" the other day and it was fantastic. Really funny and witty. I did pay 65 quid per ticket, and I possibly could have got them cheaper, but I needed a treat.

VienneseWhirligig · 14/11/2021 18:49

Came on to recommend Central Tickets too, I have had some excellent deals - saw Bat Out Of Hell for £2.50 as a seat filler and Mamma Mia for £15. Even got free tickets for a Rod Stewart gig.

Keep your eye on officiallondontheatre.com/tkts/

Onlinedilema · 14/11/2021 18:51

I've found ticket prices have increased since covid.
The West end is especially expensive.
I did however get to see Waitress for £25 in a great regional theatre. It was discounted as they needed to fill up the theatre

Wizzbangfizz · 14/11/2021 18:54

@Comefromaway thanks for that looking to book LK in December

cherrypiepie · 14/11/2021 19:07

Joined the groups on Facebook and now want to see ALL the shows.

Moulin Rouge is next in my list! Love the film too.
