Why is my heart rate so high this evening? (100bpm+)

I’m 38 and asthmatic, so my heart rate is at the top end of normal usually. For context, my resting heart rate has ranged between 61-64 in the past week.

This evening, DH and I have simply been relaxing and watching TV. Lying almost horizontally on the sofa, my Apple Watch has, three times, alerted me that my heart rate has been over 100 for ten minutes:

22:20: 100-107
23:01: 100-103
23:45: 102-107

I’m sober, I don’t feel anxious, but I can feel my heart has been galloping for the past few hours.

Does anyone know what could be causing this please?

DH just suggested I do a lateral flow.

I went upstairs to get them from the spare room and my heart rate went up to 153 just from climbing the stairs….

Have you taken your temperature?
Do you feel unwell or pain anywhere?

I know a raised heart beat can be inreponse to a temperature or for pain or an infection.

Have you eaten a big meal as that sometimes makes mine go up?

Also have you manually taken your heart rate ....your watch might be wrong?

Multiple possibles for that brief period of tachycardia.
Heat, caffeine, electrolyte imbalance, prescription drugs like ventolin inhaler to name but a few.
And 60 to 64 is not the upper of a normal heart rate its average.
It's one thing I don't like about those type of watches they can cause anxiety in situations like this when in all likelihood every thing is fine.

I have found that since being in perimenopause, my heart rate becomes high for no reason around the big hormonal changes in my cycle. It is really disturbing and unpleasant but I am mildly reassured since I realised it was part of a lot of cyclical patterns. I realise it could be nothing like this for you, but I hadn't even considered that as an explanation, so I thought I'd mention it.

Cillmantain · 14/11/2021 00:22

Would agree with other poster, check it manually.

HighHeart · 14/11/2021 00:28

I’ve just checked it manually - 57 beats in 30 seconds.

I don’t have a thermometer, I don’t feel hot, in fact earlier this evening I was complaining I felt cold! But I’m fine now.

I don’t feel unwell or in pain.

Dinner wasn’t large and I haven’t had any pudding! Smile

Have you taken ventolin? That can really ramp up your heart rate

Pinkchocolate · 14/11/2021 00:34

While your heart rate is mostly well within the normal range of 60-120bpm the increase is worrying. I would call 111 and get some medical advice.

Mynameisrow · 14/11/2021 00:34

My heart rate was wild like this when I had covid and went up massively when I went up stairs. Didn’t drop below 100 for days whilst I was awake.
According to my Fitbit I spent the whole illness in fat burn/cardio zone

namechanged221 · 14/11/2021 00:39

This is why I wouldn't use a Fitbit or Apple Watch. You've been given a big dose of health anxiety from a bloody watch.

I haven’t got anxiety. I said that in the OP. I’m feeling absolutely fine, but I’ve asked for possible reasons why my heart rate has been over 100 since 9:15pm. I find the heart rate monitor on my watch absolutely spot on, as it happens.

I'd second the Covid suggestion. All our family (including an otherwise fit and healthy teen) had similarly raised heart rates for a couple of weeks after testing positive for Covid. Do a test. I've never registered so many zone minutes or that level of fat burn on my Fitbit until I caught Covid!

HighHeart · 14/11/2021 01:46

Hope it isn’t Covid! My lateral flow was negative so fingers crossed.
