Cervical cancer symptoms

Hi I’m looking for some advice please. Really anxious and confused at the moment.

On Wednesday I had my long overdue smear done, the nurse said she could see something wrong with my cervix but wasn’t sure if it was cervix erosion a lesion ect.. I mentioned that I have had pain and bleeding during and after sex for more than 6 months. Also heavy/dull pelvic pain that spreads down my right leg (I didn’t know these were symptoms of cervical cancer until after the app i googled it). I left the doctors office and 20mins later the nurse called me and said my gp wanted to see me the next day.

I went to see my gp (nurse was there too). He done an exam and pelvic exam. Said there’s definitely something going on with the cervix but didn’t mention anything the nurse thought it was. Then he said he’s referring me to see a gynecologist. Didn’t say when the app would be & wouldn’t say what he thinks is wrong. I’m just worried as they don’t even have my smear results back yet & I’m already getting referred to a gynae. Should I be worried?

So sorry for the long post.

I would phone and ask for more information. Don't just be fobbed off. My experience of the health service is that most people don't want the facts so doctors mess about with euphemisms and don't commit to saying what they think is wrong. Don't just accept that they didn't tell you - keep asking! And good luck.

Thank you so much. I’m definitely planning on giving them a call on Monday when they open. Just sitting over thinking and worrying myself lol. Thought it couldn’t hurt to have some opinions on the matter and see if anyone had been through something similar.

I'm sure you're thankful about them being quick to act and get you referred. Hopefully it is an issue that can be smoothly treated and sorted.

Wait till you hear the smear results before you Google symptoms and worry yourself. Hope the gynae referral comes through soon!

I think, with those symptoms, and a visual examination, you will have been referred on the 2 week pathway. Don't panic. They need to do this to rule out cancer as much as to diagnose it. It's good because you will be seen quickly - or as quickly as possible in covid times - and not be at the end of a general gynae list. Hopefully, you will be seen by a gyneoncologist.
There are other conditions it could be that aren't malignant. Stick with the NHS or Macmillan sites if you're tempted to go on-line, but, as pp said, better to wait till you know more.
Fingers crossed all will be well, but if you need a handhold while you're waiting, go to the cancer thread on the General Health board. Everyone there gets how you're feeling now and there have been many in your position who've been waved off with congratulations when their fears have been proved groundless.
Good luck!

Don’t panic.
You’re being seen to quickly and you’re in good hands.

They found I had cervical cancer and I’ve just had a hysterectomy to remove my womb and cervix. I feel great and no different to not having it in there.

Appin · 13/11/2021 22:49

You're clearly on the cancer pathway, so you'll see a Gynaecologist within the next few weeks for a colposcopy. It's likely they'll take a biopsy to have a closer look.

Things move very quickly when you're on this pathway. I saw my gp on the 6th, had colposcopy on the 17th, then again on the 26th, and diagnosis on the 2nd. My symptoms sound similar to yours and I'm fine now, had hysterectomy two months after seeing the GP.

It's likely its not cancer, but also possible it could be, and you should take reassurance in the fact things will move quickly. In the meantime the Jo's Trust website and forums are a great source of support.

Take care xx

@StillCounting123 I am very thankful for that as I know how long people can wait for referrals ect, thank you very much! I’m definitely staying off google from now on lol.

@Thymeout thank you so much for your advice, really appreciate it. I’m hoping I will be one of those people also but still a bit in shock about it atm so I’ll definitely look in to what you have recommended.

Missymac27 · 13/11/2021 22:54
